Potential antimicrobial and antibiofilm efficacy of essential oil nanoemulsion loaded polycaprolactone nanofibrous dermal patches

Summary: Formulating nanofibers loaded with peppermint oil nanoemulsion (PO) blended with polycaprolactone (PCL)via electrospinning technique has been studied. The results showed that PO emulsion droplets were in the nano-range and easily included inside the fibers. Furthermore, PO-loaded PCL nanofibers exhibited powerful antimicrobial and antifungal activities, with PCL-4 showing four times greater antimicrobial activity than PO nanoemulsion.

Summary: Bio-based controlled release fertilizers (BCRFs) are replacing petroleum-based controlled release fertilizers (CRFs) due to their cost-effectiveness and renewability. This study developed a multifunctional double layered bio-based CRF (DCRF) with improved nitrogen and selenium release properties, resulting in increased yield and nutritive value of cherry radish. The DCRF also showed inhibitory effects on Fusarium oxysporum and continuous resistance to soil-borne fungal diseases. This multifunctional fertilizer has great potential for expanding the use of BCRFs for sustainable agriculture.

Doubling growth of egg-box structure during Calcium-mediated molecular assembly of alginate

Summary: In this study, the Ca-induced structural evolution of alginate in dilute solution was investigated using atomic force microscopy and dilute solution viscometry. It was found that the structural evolution follows three critical steps: monocomplexation, dimerization, and multimerization. A mechanistic model depicting the evolution of the egg-box structure was proposed. These findings provide new insights into the molecular assembly and gelation of alginate and lay a foundation for the molecular engineering of alginate for advanced applications.

Incorporation of oxidized debranched starch/chitosan nanoparticles for enhanced hydrophobicity of corn starch films

Summary: The hydrophobicity of corn starch films was improved by adding a new type of covalently formed, oxidized debranched starch/chitosan nanoparticles (SC-NPs). SC-NPs were obtained by a Schiff-base crosslinking reaction between the aldehyde group of dialdehyde debranched starch and the amino group of chitosan. The films reinforced with 3% SC-NPs showed greater water contact angles and improved barrier properties compared to pure starch films.

Sludge-derived biopolymers for in-situ synthesis of magnetic ALE-Fe-Zr composites for phosphate removal

Summary: In this study, alginate-like exopolysaccharides (ALE) were used as biotemplates to fabricate controllable nanostructures for phosphate removal. ALE-metal composites showed high phosphate removal efficiencies due to their homogeneity, high specific surface area, and mesoporous structure. The composites also exhibited stable performance under a wide pH range and high selectivity to phosphate. The possible adsorption mechanisms involved electrostatic interaction, ligand exchange, and Lewis acid-base interaction. This work provided a facile route for synthesizing ALE-mediated magnetic composites with high efficiency, selectivity, and stability for phosphate removal.

These results indicate the potential of this system for topical drug delivery in treating superficial mycoses and cutaneous leishmaniasis.
