Transduodenal ampullectomy for early ampullary cancer: Clinical management, histopathological findings and long-term outcomes at a single center

Ryoichi Miyamoto et al.

Summary: In this study, the perioperative and long-term outcomes of patients with early ampullary cancer who underwent transduodenal ampullectomy were investigated. The transduodenal ampullectomy group showed advantages in terms of shorter operating time, less intraoperative blood loss, and shorter length of postoperative hospital stay compared to the subtotal stomach-preserving pancreatoduodenectomy group. Moreover, the 5-year survival rate varied depending on the extent of ampullary cancer invasion. The results suggest that transduodenal ampullectomy is a feasible and effective surgical procedure for selected patients with early ampullary cancer.

Preoperative prognostic nutritional index predicts short-term complications after radical resection of distal cholangiocarcinoma

Yulong He et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine immune-nutritional indexes (INIs) that can predict short-term postoperative complications in patients with distal cholangiocarcinoma (dCCA). A retrospective analysis of 148 patients who underwent radical pancreaticoduodenectomy was conducted, and the preoperative prognostic nutritional index (PNI) was found to have the highest discriminatory power for complications. A decision tree model identified PNI and total bilirubin (TBIL) as important predictors for complications.

Summary: The American Cancer Society predicts that there will be 1,958,310 new cancer cases and 609,820 cancer deaths in the United States in 2023. While incidence trends for most cancers are favorable, prostate cancer saw a significant increase of 3% annually from 2014 to 2019. However, the overall cancer death rate continues to decline due to advances in treatment, with a 33% reduction since 1991.

Preoperative controlling nutritional status score predicts systemic disease recurrence in patients with resectable biliary tract cancer

Masato Mito et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the association between the preoperative Controlling Nutritional Status (CONUT) score, survival outcomes, and recurrence pattern in patients with resectable biliary tract cancer (BTC). The study found that a high preoperative CONUT score was independently associated with worse survival outcomes and a higher risk of distant recurrence in patients with resectable BTC.

Prognostic and clinicopathological impacts of Controlling Nutritional Status (CONUT) score on patients with gynecological cancer: a meta-analysis

Zheng Niu et al.

Summary: This meta-analysis found that higher CONUT scores were significantly associated with decreased overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) in gynecological cancer. Moreover, higher CONUT scores were significantly correlated with a histological grade of G3, a tumor size ≥4 cm, and an advanced FIGO stage. However, the correlation between the CONUT score and lymph node metastasis was not significant.

Prognostic Impact of Inflammation-Based Scores for Extrahepatic Cholangiocarcinoma

Riki Asakura et al.

Summary: This study aimed to verify the usefulness of various inflammation-based scores as prognostic factors in patients with resected extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma. Among the scores examined, C-reactive protein to albumin ratio (CAR) showed the most valuable prognostic value. High CAR (>0.23) was found to be an independent prognostic factor for overall survival along with lymph node metastasis and curability.

How I treat biliary tract cancer

A. Lamarca et al.

Summary: Management of biliary tract cancers is rapidly evolving, with surgical resection followed by adjuvant chemotherapy being the main treatment option. For advanced disease, chemotherapy is the cornerstone, but targeted therapies for specific gene mutations are showing promising results. Molecular profiling is important for treatment planning and research.

Fumihiro Terasaki et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the prognostic factors for overall survival in patients with distal cholangiocarcinoma after pancreatoduodenectomy by assessing the controlling nutritional status (CONUT) score, finding that a preoperative CONUT score can be a useful predictor of long-term survival in these patients.

Controlling Nutritional Status Score Before Receiving Treatment as a Prognostic Indicator for Patients With Urothelial Cancer: An Exploration Evaluation Methods

Summary: This meta-analysis demonstrates that the CONUT score before treatment in UC patients can independently predict their prognosis, showing significant associations with overall survival, cancer-specific survival, and recurrence-free survival. However, the conclusions regarding progression-free survival and disease-free survival are less conclusive. The findings suggest clinical relevance for prognostic evaluation in UC patients.
