3D-Printed Microfluidic One-Way Valves and Pumps

Hunter Hinnen et al.

Summary: New microfluidic lab-on-a-chip capabilities are enabled by broadening the toolkit of devices that can be created using microfabrication processes. Three different designs for microfluidic one-way valves fabricated using 3D printing are demonstrated in this paper. These valves have an internal volume of 5-10 nL and their operating characteristics are compared. Pump designs using these one-way valves are also shown, which require a single pneumatic input and can be used to create a diffusion mixer with reduced complexity.

Beyond the Threshold: A Study of Chalcogenophene-Based Two- Photon Initiators

Markus Lunzer et al.

Summary: A series of soluble and symmetric chalcogenophenes have been designed and synthesized as potential two-photon absorption initiators. The photophysical analysis reveals their good 2PA properties, especially the strong influence of selenium on 2PA cross sections, making them promising new 2PA photoinitiators. The efficiency and spectral versatility of two selenium-containing lead compounds have been confirmed through structuring and threshold tests, showing superior reactivity and dose compared to commercial initiators.

Deterministic Lateral Displacement Microfluidic Chip for Minicell Purification

Ahmad Sherbaz et al.

Summary: Deterministic lateral displacement (DLD) is a microfluidic technique used for particle separation, which has the potential for integration into bioreactors for therapeutic applications. In this study, a DLD microchip was designed to separate rod-shaped bacterial cells from submicron spherical minicells. The geometrical parameters of the microchip were optimized to achieve a separation efficiency as high as 75.5% on a single-stage separation.

A Polystyrene Photoresin for Direct Lithography of Microfluidic Chips

Santiago Franco Corredor et al.

Summary: Polystyrene (PS) is a commonly used material in medical, biological, and biomedical applications due to its beneficial properties. However, rapid prototyping and high-resolution shaping of PS, particularly on a micron scale, are still limited. This study introduces a novel photocurable PS photoresin that enables the fabrication of microfluidic chips with high optical transparency and comparable properties to commercial PS. This method allows researchers in various fields to produce suitable PS structures using commercial equipment.

Microfluidic chip fabrication and performance analysis of 3D printed material for use in microfluidic nucleic acid amplification applications

Charalampos Tzivelekis et al.

Summary: Additive manufacturing for microfluidics has the potential to enhance research in biotechnology and molecular diagnostics. This paper presents novel techniques for creating monolithic microfluidic chip geometry for PCR thermocycling using stereolithography. A two-stage printing protocol with projection SLA was used to print disposable oscillating-flow microfluidic cartridges for PCR, showing promising results in terms of print performance and material compatibility. Post-treatment steps such as UV light exposure and solvent washes were effective in reducing PCR inhibiting residuals and improving reaction facilitation.

Combining Hydrophilic and Hydrophobic Materials in 3D Printing for Fabricating Microfluidic Devices with Spatial Wettability

Max J. Maennel et al.

Summary: The fabrication of microfluidic flow cells using projection micro-stereolithography (PμSL) allows for precise control of surface properties to create desired flow profiles, such as emulsion droplets. Homemade photopolymer formulations are designed to create either hydrophilic or hydrophobic surfaces, enabling the 3D printing of microchannels with specific wettabilities. By combining these materials, it is possible to fabricate microfluidic flow cells with spatially defined wettability for emulsion formation.
