Critical Care Randomized Trials Demonstrate Power Failure: A Low Positive Predictive Value of Findings in the Critical Care Research Field

Sarah Nostedt et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the post-hoc power of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in critical care and found that the post-hoc power for small effect-size was generally low, except for adult RCTs with medium effect-size. The study also highlighted the poor predictive value of findings with small effect-size, unless a stricter alpha level (0.005) was used. The authors concluded that RCTs in critical care should be designed to have 80% power for realistic effect-size at alpha 0.005.

Effects of non-pharmacologic prevention on delirium in critically ill patients: A network meta-analysis

Yutaka Matsuura et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effectiveness of non-pharmacological interventions in preventing delirium among critically ill patients and found that multicomponent interventions had a significant effect. The network meta-analysis revealed that the combination of SP-CS-EM-PC-AS and SP-CS was the most effective in reducing the incidence of delirium.

Comparative effectiveness of non-pharmacological interventions for preventing delirium in critically ill adults: A systematic review and network meta-analysis

Ting-Jhen Chen et al.

Summary: This study compared the effects of different non-pharmacological interventions on the incidence and duration of delirium in intensive care units through network meta-analysis. The results showed that a multicomponent strategy was the most effective intervention in reducing delirium incidence, and early mobilization and family participation also had a significant effect on reducing delirium incidence.

Summary: In this large randomized controlled trial in adult ICU patients, while a multicomponent nursing intervention program was implemented, no change in delirium-free and coma-free days alive in 28 days could be determined. The time spent on interventions did not significantly differ between the intervention and control periods.
