In Vitro Synergistic Activity of Antimicrobial Combinations against Carbapenem- and Colistin-Resistant Acinetobacter baumannii and Klebsiella pneumoniae

Paraskevi Mantzana et al.

Summary: This study assessed the in vitro synergistic activity of antimicrobial combinations against carbapenem-resistant and colistin-resistant A. baumannii and K. pneumoniae, aiming to provide more treatment options for these infections. The tested antimicrobial combinations demonstrated high synergy rates, making them valuable options against A. baumannii and K. pneumoniae infections.

Evolution of Antibiotic Resistance in Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae Clinical Isolates in a Multi-Profile Hospital over 5 Years (2017-2021)

Beata Maczynska et al.

Summary: In recent years, the use and overuse of broad-spectrum antimicrobial agents have led to a growing drug resistance among bacteria. This study aimed to analyze the changes in drug resistance of Gram-negative Enterobacterales over five years. The evaluation of these data will help determine changes in susceptibility to antibiotics used in the hospital and propose new therapeutic options for severe infections. The analysis revealed that the number of multi-resistant K. pneumoniae strains has been increasing, possibly due to the widespread use of broad-spectrum antibiotics during the pandemic.

Dissemination of Clinical Acinetobacter baumannii Isolate to Hospital Environment during the COVID-19 Pandemic

Emina Pustijanac et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to identify the source of Acinetobacter baumannii in the ICU after a COVID-19 outbreak, as it was not found on usually screened surfaces. A single A. baumannii isolate was recovered from the air conditioner and compared to clinical isolates from patients. Molecular and antibiotic resistance analysis confirmed that the isolate from the air conditioner was the same strain as those from patients. The study highlights the importance of disinfecting hospital air conditioners to prevent A. baumannii outbreaks.

Colistin Resistance in Acinetobacter baumannii: Molecular Mechanisms and Epidemiology

Katarina Novovic et al.

Summary: A. baumannii is a clinically significant pathogen causing various nosocomial infections. Colistin, as a last-resort antibiotic, is used to treat multidrug-resistant A. baumannii infections. However, several mechanisms of colistin resistance in A. baumannii have been reported, including loss of LPS, modifications of target LPS, and efflux of colistin. In addition, widespread heteroresistance in A. baumannii contributes to colistin treatment failure. This review critically assesses the molecular mechanisms and global distribution of colistin-resistant strains in A. baumannii based on more than 50 experimental papers.

Antibiotic resistance in hospital-acquired ESKAPE-E infections in low- and lower-middle-income countries: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Olaniyi Ayobami et al.

Summary: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) are global health challenges. This study summarizes recent data on antibiotic resistance in priority HAIs (ESKAPE-E) in low- and lower-middle-income countries (L-LMICs) and compares them with data from high-income countries (HICs). The results show that antibiotic resistance is higher in L-LMICs compared to HICs.

Aminoglycoside resistance in Pseudomonas aeruginosa: the contribution of the MexXY-OprM efflux pump varies between isolates

Aswin Thacharodi et al.

Summary: The MexXY-OprM efflux pump plays an isolate-specific role in aminoglycoside resistance in clinical isolates of P. aeruginosa. The interplay between MexXY, MexZ, and the level of mexXY expression is important in determining the resistance level. The affinity of MexZ for DNA is a key factor in regulating mexXY expression and aminoglycoside efflux.

Trends and correlation between antibacterial consumption and carbapenem resistance in gram-negative bacteria in a tertiary hospital in China from 2012 to 2019

Chunhong Liang et al.

Summary: A study conducted in a tertiary-care teaching hospital in southern China from 2012 to 2019 revealed significant correlations between antibiotic consumption and carbapenem resistance rates in Gram-negative bacteria. The findings suggest that implementing proper management strategies and reducing the unreasonable use of antibacterial drugs may help in reducing the spread of carbapenem-resistant Gram-negative bacteria.

Acinetobacter baumannii Antibiotic Resistance Mechanisms

Ioannis Kyriakidis et al.

Summary: Acinetobacter baumannii is a Gram-negative ESKAPE microorganism that poses a threat to public health due to severe and invasive infections, often nosocomial, with high mortality rates. The pathogen has displayed multidrug resistance, mainly due to extensive antibiotic use and poor stewardship. Next-generation sequencing has improved diagnosis of A. baumannii infections, leading to personalized therapeutic regimens based on resistance gene identification, while the genetic background of resistance mechanisms and virulence factors are being extensively studied.
