Sentinel Lymph Node in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer: Assessment of Feasibility and Safety by Near-Infrared Fluorescence Imaging and Clinical Consequences

Florent Stasiak et al.

Summary: Occult micrometastases, which routine pathological analysis may miss, can be detected through mapping of the pulmonary lymphatic system by near-infrared fluorescence imaging. Identifying the sentinel lymph node (SLN) through this technique and analyzing it using immunohistochemistry may improve micrometastasis detection and staging in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients undergoing thoracic surgery. This study assessed the feasibility and safety of identifying SLNs using NIR fluorescence imaging in NSCLC patients.

How effective is indocyanine green (ICG) in localization of malignant pulmonary nodules? A systematic review and meta-analysis

Andreas Gkikas et al.

Summary: Background: Video-assisted and robotic-assisted techniques have become increasingly prominent in thoracic surgery for lung cancer. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of indocyanine green (ICG) in intra-operative lung cancer detection. Methods: A systematic review of the literature was conducted, and meta-analysis was performed to determine the accuracy of different ICG localization techniques. Results: Thirty eligible studies were included, involving a total of 1,776 patients. CT-guided, endobronchial, and intravenous techniques were identified. The success rate for CT-guided and endobronchial methods was high, while intravenous ICG localization showed lower specificity. Conclusion: Current evidence suggests that ICG is both effective and safe for lung cancer detection. Further standardized research is needed to validate these findings.

Electromagnetic navigation bronchoscopic localization versus percutaneous CT-guided localization for thoracoscopic resection of small pulmonary nodules

Yan-Long Yang et al.

Summary: Both electromagnetic navigation bronchoscopic marking and CT-guided percutaneous marking using ICG and iopamidol are safe and effective for preoperative localization of pulmonary nodules. Bronchoscopic approach allows marking of multiple lesion areas without increasing the risk of complications.

Targeted Near-Infrared Fluorescence Imaging With Iodized Indocyanine Green in Preoperative Pulmonary Localization: Comparative Efficacy, Safety, Patient Perception With Hook-Wire Localization

Ning Ding et al.

Summary: This study found that ICG preoperative localization has a lower complication rate, lower pain score, and relatively higher success rate compared to traditional hook-wire localization. Therefore, ICG is a promising alternative method for preoperative localization of pulmonary nodules.

Computed Tomography-Guided Methylene Blue Localization: Single vs. Multiple Lung Nodules

Chia-Ying Lin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the efficacy of preoperative CT-guided methylene blue localization for both single and multiple pulmonary nodules in single-port video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery. The success rate of localization was comparable between single and multiple nodules, but the procedure time and risk of pneumothorax were higher in the multiple nodule group. Nodule depth was identified as an independent risk factor for pulmonary hemorrhage.
