Augmented Reality to Assist Skin Paddle Harvesting in Osteomyocutaneous Fibular Flap Reconstructive Surgery: A Pilot Evaluation on a 3D-Printed Leg Phantom

Laura Cercenelli et al.

Summary: This study utilized augmented reality (AR) technology to assist in skin paddle harvesting surgery, and tested the registration accuracy of two display solutions as well as the success rate of the AR-guided skin paddle incision task. The results showed that the proposed marker-less AR protocol can ensure a registration error within 1-5 mm for assisting skin paddle harvesting in the clinical setting.

Anatomical Computerized Exploration to Excise Malignancies in Deep Facial Compartments: An Advanced Virtual Reality Protocol for a Tailored Surgical Approach

Alessandro Tel et al.

Summary: This study describes the design and application of a novel advanced protocol for virtual three-dimensional anatomical reconstruction of the deep facial compartments, aiming to improve the preoperative understanding and the intraoperative assistance in complex resective surgeries. The study included seven patients with successful application of the protocol, achieving overall reconstruction rates superior to 90% for major caliber vessels. Virtual surgical planning and multilayer anatomical reconstruction proved to be valuable methods in improving surgical outcomes in deep facial compartments.

The Transantral Endoscopic Approach: A Portal for Masses of the Inferior Orbit-Improving Surgeons' Experience Through Virtual Endoscopy and Augmented Reality

Alessandro Tel et al.

Summary: Endoscopic techniques have shown promising results in minimally invasive orbital surgery, but also come with limitations compared to traditional open surgery. Virtual surgical planning and anatomical computer-generated models play a crucial role in planning endoscopic approaches, which can be further enhanced with surgical navigation, virtual endoscopy simulation, and augmented reality. The integration of these technologies allows for a more accurate and effective surgical scenario preview, improving orientation and maneuver effectiveness during endoscopic procedures.
