Frequency of Smoking and Marginal Bone Loss around Dental Implants: A Retrospective Matched-Control Study

Amir Ali et al.

Summary: This retrospective study compared the marginal bone loss around dental implants in smokers and non-smokers, with a focus on different frequencies of daily smoking. The results showed that smoking degree, bruxism, jaw location, prosthesis fixation, and implant diameter had a significant effect on bone loss over time. The degree of smoking was positively correlated with bone loss, but the difference was not significant for high degrees of smoking (>10 cigarettes/day).

LEVELS OF SMOKING AND PERI-IMPLANT MARGINAL BONE LOSS: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW AND META-ANALYSIS

Zohreh Afshari et al.

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis found that there is a significantly enhanced risk of peri-implant marginal bone loss with the increased number of cigarettes smoked per day. The results suggest that the risk of marginal bone loss steadily increases as daily smoking increases.

Exploring the Importance of Corticalization Occurring in Alveolar Bone Surrounding a Dental Implant

Marcin Kozakiewicz et al.

Summary: This study examines the relationship between implant design features and marginal bone loss (MBL) and corticalization intensity over a 10-year period of functional loading. The results suggest that peri-implant jawbone corticalization may have negative implications for the long-term fate of bone-anchored implants.

Tomasz Wach et al.

Summary: This study investigates the reasons for marginal bone loss (MBL) after dental implant insertion without loading, finding that torque value during implant insertion and procedure location are related to MBL. Through analyzing texture features, some potential indicators of MBL in digital dental surgery were also discovered.

Summary: By integrating insights from literature review, focus groups, and expert opinions, a preliminary conceptual framework was developed to measure the impact of switching from cigarettes to less harmful products on health and functioning. The future measurement model includes domains such as physical health, functioning, appearance, cognition, emotions, and social aspects, which can inform the development of new tools for assessing overall health and functioning impact from the consumers' perspective.

Tomasz Wach et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that blended collagen-calcium phosphate as a bone substitute material can achieve satisfactory and predictable outcomes in jawbone regeneration. Texture analysis revealed that all 4 features described the healing process well. Over a 12-month period, bone regeneration was confirmed by 3 of the 4 investigated features, with only Entr indicating CP remnants in the ROI.

Summary: The study revealed that smoking is a risk factor for second primary lung cancer (SPLC), and smoking cessation may reduce the risk of SPLC. Additionally, individuals who meet the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force's criteria at the diagnosis of initial primary lung cancer also have an increased risk of developing SPLC.

Skeletal System Biology and Smoke Damage: From Basic Science to Medical Clinic

Umberto Tarantino et al.

Summary: Cigarette smoking negatively impacts the skeletal system by reducing bone mass and increasing fracture risk. It also causes an imbalance in bone turnover, making bones vulnerable to osteoporosis and fragility fractures. Smoking is known to have deleterious effects on fracture healing and leads to longer hospital stays and increased resource consumption.

The survival rates and risk factors of implants in the early stage: a retrospective study

Yong Yang et al.

Summary: The study focused on early survival rates of dental implants in China, with a cohort of 1078 cases and 2053 implants. The overall early survival rate exceeded 96%, with factors such as age, bone quality, bone augmentation, implant length, and immediate implantation identified as risk factors for early survival rates. Careful consideration should be given to these factors when placing implants.
