The Effect of Minimally Invasive Surgery and Sternotomy on Physical Activity and Quality of Life

Summary: Compared to traditional median sternotomy (MS), minimally invasive surgery (MI) showed better health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and early functional outcomes postoperatively, even in frail patients. The study found that patients who underwent MI had faster recovery of physical activity immediately after surgery and superior HRQoL in the first 3 months, with differences becoming indistinguishable over a longer follow-up period. The MS group had a higher cumulative incidence of events than the MI group.
