Comparison of Lumbar and Ventricular Cerebrospinal Fluid for Diagnosis and Monitoring of Meningitis

Bhavika Kakadia et al.

Summary: This study compares CSF analysis from EVD and LP in 6 patients with meningitis. While corrected WBC counts were elevated in both LP and EVD CSF, they were significantly higher in LP CSF, along with higher protein concentration. Despite EVD CSF being obtained later in the clinical course, the slower circulation of CSF in the lumbar space compared to ventricles may account for its more sterile appearance.
