Global burden of hepatitis B virus: current status, missed opportunities and a call for action

Yao-Chun Hsu et al.

Summary: Chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection has a significant global impact, leading to cirrhosis, liver cancer, and other complications. Despite efforts to eliminate viral hepatitis, the number of deaths from HBV is projected to increase if current measures are not improved. This review discusses the global burden of HBV infection, identifies gaps in care, and proposes solutions to achieve WHO's goal of eliminating HBV by 2030.

Mapping hepatitis B virus genotypes on the African continent from 1997 to 2021: a systematic review with meta-analysis

Hussein Mukasa Kafeero et al.

Summary: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) has diverse genotypes and sub-genotypes that affect disease prognosis and transmission routes. This study analyzed de novo genotypes and their correlation with immigration trends to understand the relative distribution of HBV genotypes. The findings showed that genotype E had the highest prevalence, and different genotypes were prevalent in different regions of Africa. Genotypes B and C were emerging and had different distributions within the continent.

Probability of HBsAg loss after nucleo(s)tide analogue withdrawal depends on HBV genotype and viral antigen levels

Milan J. Sonneveld et al.

Summary: The probability of HBsAg loss after NUC cessation varies according to patient ethnicity, HBV genotype and end-of-treatment viral antigen levels. Patients with low HBsAg and HBcrAg levels, particularly non-Asian or infected with HBV genotype C, may be the best candidates for treatment withdrawal.

Predominance of HBV Genotype B and HDV Genotype 1 in Vietnamese Patients with Chronic Hepatitis

Nghiem Xuan Hoan et al.

Summary: Hepatitis delta virus (HDV) coinfection will further worsen the burden of hepatitis B virus (HBV) in the future, leading to an increase in HBV-related liver diseases. The prevalence of the HDV-1 genotype is high in Vietnam. There was no significant correlation observed between HDV-HBV coinfections and disease progression.

Hepatitis B virus e antigen and viral persistence

Kuen-Nan Tsai et al.

Summary: HBeAg, discovered nearly 50 years ago in HBV patients, may play a crucial role in HBV persistence and possess immunomodulatory activities. Recent research progress indicates that HBeAg may promote HBV persistence by modulating host immunity.

Biological Characterization of Hepatitis B virus Genotypes: Their Role in Viral Replication and Antigen Expression

Maria Mercedes Elizalde et al.

Summary: This study provides new insights into the biological characteristics of HBV genotypes, showing significant differences in replication capacity and antigen expression among different genotypes. Understanding these differences may help to elucidate the differential role of genotypes in the pathogenesis of HBV.

Clinical significance of quantitative e antigen in a cohort of hepatitis B virus-infected children and adults in North America

Stewart L. Cooper et al.

Summary: The study found that the level of circulating HBeAg is associated with the degree of liver injury in HBeAg-positive CHB patients, as well as with race and age. In Asians, qHBeAg was inversely related to age, with a less clear relationship in Blacks and Whites. Additionally, regardless of sex, age, race, and HBV genotype, qHBeAg was higher in participants with predominant wild-type viral variants.

Chronic hepatitis B infection with concomitant hepatic steatosis: Current evidence and opinion

Yi-Wen Shi et al.

Summary: This review examines the overlapping prevalence of metabolic disorders and CHB, assesses the risk of advanced fibrosis/hepatocellular carcinoma in CHB patients with NAFLD, and discusses remaining clinical issues. Addressing concomitant NAFLD through lifestyle management and disease screening is crucial for better outcomes in CHB patients, and further research is needed for the assessment of progressive changes and novel therapies in these patients.
