Randomized trial of prophylactic antibiotics vs. placebo after midshaft-to-distal hypospadias repair: the PROPHY Study

Mark A. Faasse et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effect of postoperative prophylactic antibiotics on the incidence of infection or urethroplasty complications after stented repair of midshaft-to-distal hypospadias. The results showed that prophylactic antibiotics did not reduce the occurrence of infection or urethroplasty complications.

Proactive discontinuation of postoperative antibiotic prophylaxis after urethroplasty

Takeshi Hanasaki et al.

Summary: This study examined the clinical significance of discontinuing prophylactic antimicrobial administration after urethroplasty. The results showed that treating preoperative bacteriuria and using antibiotics until Postoperative Day 2, followed by a pause without prophylaxis, did not significantly impact postoperative infectious complications. The overall success rates of the surgery were high, with patient age being the only significant factor affecting objective success.

Minimizing Antibiotic Use in Urethral Reconstruction

Sunchin Kim et al.

Summary: The study aimed to examine the guidelines for antibiotic management in patients undergoing urethral reconstruction and determine whether prolonged antibiotic use could prevent infections. The use of a standardized protocol demonstrated no benefit to prolonged antibiotic use and there were no identifiable risk factors among surgical characteristics.

Summary: Management of male urethral strictures is complex, with various techniques available. Endoluminal treatments may be suitable for short, nonobliterative strictures, while urethroplasty requires adaptation to the local conditions of the stricture for durable patency rates.

Antibiotic Duration After Urethroplasty: An Attempt at Improving Antibiotic Stewardship

Wesley Baas et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the impact of extended postoperative antibiotic prophylaxis on UTI and wound infection rates following urethroplasty. The results showed that there was no significant difference in UTI or wound infection rates between the two groups, suggesting that extended postoperative antibiotic prophylaxis may not have a significant effect on UTI or wound infection rates following urethroplasty.

A comparison of urethral catheterization duration-three weeks versus two weeks after bulbar urethroplasty

Marius Joachim Beiske et al.

Summary: This study compared the incidence of UTI in patients undergoing bulbar urethroplasty with urethral catheterization for either three weeks or two weeks postoperatively. The results showed a higher incidence of UTI in patients with a two-week catheterization duration, suggesting that a shorter duration may be more favorable for patients undergoing this procedure.
