Effects of perioperative erythropoietin administration on acute kidney injury and red blood cell transfusion in patients undergoing cardiac surgery A systematic review and meta-analysis

Hyeon Ju Shin et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the use of erythropoietin (EPO) in cardiac surgery and found that pre-operative administration of EPO can reduce the incidence of cardiac surgery-associated acute kidney injury (CSA-AKI) and red blood cell transfusion. Additionally, pre-operative EPO treatment can also decrease intra-operative RBC transfusion and hospital length of stay.

Impact of chronic kidney disease in 29 893 patients undergoing transcatheter or surgical aortic valve replacement from the German Aortic Valve Registry

Silvia Mas-Peiro et al.

Summary: Higher CKD stages were associated with lower survival rates for patients undergoing both TAVI and SAVR. CKD >= 3b and CKD >= 3a were identified as the major independent risk factors for mortality in TAVI and SAVR patients, respectively. Stratification based on CKD substage may help in selecting appropriate patients for these therapies.

Change in Kidney Function and 2-Year Mortality After Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement

Guy Witberg et al.

Summary: In this study, outcomes of kidney function after TAVR were reassuring; more than 80% of patients showed stable or improved kidney function 1 month after the procedure. Improvement in kidney function was associated with lower 2-year mortality, while deterioration in kidney function was associated with increased mortality.
