Infant gut microbiome composition correlated with type 1 diabetes acquisition in the general population: the ABIS study

Malin Belteky et al.

Summary: This study identified gut microbial biomarkers in 1-year-old infants that are associated with the development of type 1 diabetes up to 20 years before diagnosis. The presence of these biomarkers suggests the potential for early prevention of the disease by promoting a healthy gut microbiome.

Factors associated with the composition of the gut microbiome in patients with established rheumatoid arthritis and its value for predicting treatment responses

Jung Hee Koh et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the gut microbiota of patients with established rheumatoid arthritis (RA) who have been managed with disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) for a long time. The gut microbiota composition in RA patients was different from that of healthy individuals. Although biological DMARDs and csDMARDs did not affect gut microbial composition in patients with established RA, the combination of Subdoligranulum and Fusicatenibacter genera was associated with a future good response to csDMARDs in patients who showed an insufficient response to first-line csDMARDs.

Moving from nature to nurture: a systematic review and meta-analysis of environmental factors associated with juvenile idiopathic arthritis

Summary: This review collates and synthesizes the evidence of environmental factors associated with JIA from 39 studies. The findings suggest that cesarean section delivery is associated with increased JIA risk, while the presence of siblings and maternal prenatal smoking are associated with decreased JIA risk.

Gut dysbiosis in rheumatic diseases: A systematic review and meta-analysis of 92 observational studies

Yilun Wang et al.

Summary: Dysbiosis in gut microbiota may be associated with the occurrence or development of rheumatic diseases. The review of existing evidence suggests that there is a decrease in alpha-diversity indices in rheumatic diseases, but the specific associations with different rheumatic diseases are inconsistent. Alterations in certain microbial populations in the gut may be related to rheumatic diseases.

Summary: The study compares characteristics of individuals with juvenile idiopathic arthritis who meet different definitions for inactive disease. A large proportion of patients in the CARRA Registry had inactive disease by single or composite measures after 1 year. There was significant overlap between patients meeting ACR CID criteria and cJADAS10 of 1 or less.

The interaction of Akkermansia muciniphila with host-derived substances, bacteria and diets

Tatsuro Hagi et al.

Summary: Trillions of microbes inhabit the human gut forming extremely complex communities, among which Akkermansia muciniphila has been widely studied for its beneficial effects on host health. Research shows that A. muciniphila can improve health and modulate its abundance by interacting with host-derived substances, other bacteria, and diets. Additionally, the potential interaction between medicine and A. muciniphila may open up future treatment strategies to increase its abundance in the gut.

Mucin degrader Akkermansia muciniphila accelerates intestinal stem cell-mediated epithelial development

Seungil Kim et al.

Summary: Mucin-degrading bacteria, such as A. muciniphila, can promote the proliferation of intestinal stem cells and differentiation of specific cell types in the small intestine and colon. Additionally, treatment with A. muciniphila leads to higher levels of acetic and propionic acids in the cecal contents of mice. Furthermore, pre-treatment with A. muciniphila can reduce gut damage caused by radiation and methotrexate, suggesting a potential role in intestinal homeostasis maintenance.
