Secular trends of cardiorespiratory fitness in children and adolescents over a 35-year period: Chronicle of a predicted foretold

Mario Leone et al.

Summary: This study reveals a decline in cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and functional capacity among Canadian youth, which raises concerns from a public health perspective. The maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) of boys and girls at the age of 10 and 17 has decreased by 18% and 12% respectively, reaching a significant level. Moreover, there has been a decrease of over 30% in functional capacity. Therefore, it is imperative to develop strategies to promote a physically active lifestyle among youth.

The global burden of metabolic disease: Data from 2000 to 2019

Nicholas W. S. Chew et al.

Summary: Global estimates from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2019 reveal increasing prevalence rates for metabolic diseases, particularly in high socio-demographic index countries. While mortality rates have decreased for some metabolic diseases, such as hyperlipidemia, hypertension, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, rates remain unchanged for type 2 diabetes mel-litus and obesity. The highest mortality rates are observed in the World Health Organization Eastern Mediterranean region and low to low-middle socio-demographic index countries.

Short-term heat acclimation protocols for an aging population: Systematic review

Edward Cole et al.

Summary: Elderly and sedentary individuals are at a higher risk of heat illness. Short-term heat acclimation (STHA) can reduce physical and mental stress in older individuals in hot environments. However, the feasibility and effectiveness of STHA protocols in this population is still unclear.

Seasonal Heat Acclimatisation in Healthy Adults: A Systematic Review

Harry A. Brown et al.

Summary: This systematic review examined the characteristics of seasonal heat acclimatisation during the summer months and identified key factors that influence the magnitude of adaptation. The review included 29 studies with a total of 561 participants. The findings suggest that the duration, intensity, and timing of outdoor physical activity play a role in seasonal heat acclimatisation.

HUMAN TEMPERATURE REGULATION UNDER HEAT STRESS IN HEALTH, DISEASE, AND INJURY

Matthew N. Cramer et al.

Summary: This review focuses on the regulation of deep body temperature in healthy and disordered human bodies during heat stress. Factors such as morphology, intrinsic factors, diseases, and injuries can independently or interactively affect deep body temperature regulation. Understanding the mechanisms behind these factors can provide insights into the impact of heat stress on the human body.

Exertional heat stroke in sport and the military: epidemiology and mitigation

Julien D. Periard et al.

Summary: This article explores the epidemiology of exertional heat stroke (EHS) and the strategies and policies designed to reduce its occurrence in sport and military settings. EHS occurs along a continuum from muscle cramps to heat exhaustion to heat stroke and is associated with multiple factors such as environmental conditions, individual characteristics, health conditions, medication use, and behavioral responses. The prevalence of EHS in sport is unclear due to inconsistent terminology, while surveillance in the military is facilitated by standardized case definitions. To mitigate the risk, strategies such as heat acclimation, adequate hydration, cold-water immersion, and work-to-rest ratios can be implemented.

A retrospective analysis to determine if exercise training-induced thermoregulatory adaptations are mediated by increased fitness or heat acclimation

Nicholas Ravanelli et al.

Summary: The study found that aerobic training, rather than V?O2max itself, increases sweat rate and reduces core temperature during uncompensable heat stress in fit individuals, which is crucial for improving thermoregulation.

Extreme Heat and Cardiovascular Health: What a Cardiovascular Health Professional Should Know

Georgia K. Chaseling et al.

Summary: Extreme heat events are increasing in frequency and intensity, impacting cardiovascular health especially for individuals with preexisting conditions. However, understanding of the pathophysiology behind this association and specific recommendations for clinical practice are currently limited. Increased awareness and further research are needed to better assess and mitigate the cardiovascular consequences of extreme heat.

Temperature regulation during exercise in the heat: Insights for the aging athlete

W. Larry Kenney et al.

Summary: This review evaluates the impact of primary aging and age-related fitness on thermoregulatory function during exercise in the heat. It suggests that high aerobic fitness can improve body temperature regulation, reduce age-related declines in thermoregulation, and enhance exercise performance for older adults in hot environmental conditions.

Climate Change, Physical Activity and Sport: A Systematic Review

Summary: The study reveals a consistent negative impact of air pollution, extreme weather conditions, and natural disasters on levels of physical activity, particularly affecting adults with chronic diseases, higher BMI, and the elderly. Although the sport and physical activity communities play an important mitigating role post-natural disasters, transport related to sports practices also contributes to greenhouse gas emissions.

EXERCISE UNDER HEAT STRESS: THERMOREGULATION, HYDRATION, PERFORMANCE IMPLICATIONS, AND MITIGATION STRATEGIES

Julien D. Periard et al.

Summary: This review comprehensively discusses the body’s response to exercise in heat stress and the measures that can be taken to enhance aerobic performance in such conditions, covering fundamental concepts, physiological processes, and strategies to mitigate the effects of hyperthermia and hypohydration on exercise performance. It also examines the impact of heat stress on human performance and hydration status, as well as the underlying physiological mechanisms and adjustments that contribute to fatigue development.
