Summary: Engineering semiconductor devices requires understanding the effective mass of electrons and holes. By combining measurements of the Seebeck and Hall effects, the density of states effective mass can be determined in doped semiconductors at room temperature and above. This method provides a simple and independent estimate of effective mass, which is helpful in understanding and designing electronic structures, particularly for characterizing thermoelectric materials.

Conduction band engineering of half-Heusler thermoelectrics using orbital chemistry

Shuping Guo et al.

Summary: This study investigates the n-type orbital phase diagram of 69 HH compounds and finds that there are two competing conduction bands at the same X point in the Brillouin zone that can be engineered to be converged. By mixing HH compounds with reverse band offsets, the strategy to achieve conduction band convergence is demonstrated through alloying VCoSn and TaCoSn, leading to a predicted solid solution with high conduction band convergence and significantly larger density-of-states effective mass. Analyzing the orbital character of band edges provides new insight into engineering the thermoelectric performance of HH compounds.

Chemical Interpretation of Charged Point Defects in Semiconductors: A Case Study of Mg2Si

Michael Y. Toriyama et al.

Summary: The electronic structures of charged point defects affect the properties of semiconductors. Understanding the orbital interactions responsible for these structures promotes understanding of defect-driven mechanisms. This tutorial presents a molecular orbital theory-based framework to understand defect-induced electronic states through local chemical interactions. Using Mg2Si as a case study, the bonding symmetry of the defect site is shown to help understand the charge states and molecular orbitals of the defect. A chemistry-based perspective of charged defects is expected to enhance defect engineering in electronic and optical materials.

Optimal band structure for thermoelectrics with realistic scattering and bands

Junsoo Park et al.

Summary: Understanding how to optimize electronic band structures for thermoelectrics is a long-standing topic of interest in the community. This study shows that the degree to which multiple pockets improve thermoelectric performance is bounded by interband scattering and the relative shapes of the bands. Extremely anisotropic flat-and-dispersive bands, while best-performing in theory, may not be a promising design strategy in practice.

Demonstration of valley anisotropy utilized to enhance the thermoelectric power factor

Airan Li et al.

Summary: The authors experimentally demonstrated the effective use of valley anisotropy in enhancing the thermoelectric performance of materials with anisotropic Fermi pockets, showing a 3-fold increase in carrier mobility along the light-band direction compared to the heavy-band direction, accompanied by a similar Seebeck coefficient and lower lattice thermal conductivity, resulting in a 3.6-fold increase in room-temperature zT. Additionally, first-principles calculations of 66 isostructural Zintl phase compounds were conducted, with 9 of them displaying a p(z)-orbital-dominated valence band similar to Mg3Sb2.

Orbital chemistry of high valence band convergence and low-dimensional topology in PbTe

Madison K. Brod et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the exceptional thermoelectric performance of PbTe, attributing it to the high valley degeneracy of the band edges. By specifically analyzing the valence band structure and utilizing methods such as alloying and temperature adjustment, the relative energy positions of the light and heavy valence bands can be effectively converged to optimize the thermoelectric properties. Additionally, the research predicts that with highly converged valence bands, there can be a topological transition in the electronic band structure towards two-dimensional and potentially one-dimensional characteristics, leading to a significant enhancement in thermoelectric performance.
