Oxidation mechanism in a refractory multiple-principal-element alloy at high temperature

Ranran Su et al.

Summary: Refractory multiple-principal-element alloys (RMPEAs) have potential as structural materials in high-temperature oxidation environments, but their oxidation behavior and microstructures, especially at the beginning of oxidation, have not been well studied. In this research, the oxidation mechanism of an equimolar W-Mo-Ta-Nb-V alloy was investigated and compared with an equimolar W-Mo-Ta-Nb alloy without V at 1300 degrees C. The oxide scale on the RMPEA alloy was found to consist of a degradation layer, an initial oxide transition layer, a main phase aggregate oxide layer, and an outermost oxide layer. The presence of vanadium accelerated the initial degradation process by forming VO.

High-throughput exploration of the WMoVTaNbAl refractory multi-principal-element alloys under multiple-property constraints

Brent Vela et al.

Summary: Development of next-generation gas turbines requires the design and fabrication of novel high-temperature structural materials capable of operating beyond 1300 degrees C. We propose a high-throughput alloy design framework that can discover new refractory multi-principal element alloys (MPEAs) for high-temperature applications under multiple property constraints. Using this framework, we identified a set of 214 MoNbV-rich alloys that meet the relevant constraints. DFT analysis and experimental characterization revealed that the Mo30Nb35Ta5V25W5 alloy outperforms 1546 MPEAs in terms of the specified constraints.

Universal Maximum Strength of Solid Metals and Alloys

Duane D. Johnson et al.

Summary: Interstitial electron density rho o is a universal metric for strength in metals, and sets the exchange-correlation parameter rs in density-functional theory. It also predicts maximum shear strength tau max and linear relationships between elastic moduli and rho o, as well as between tau max and melting/glass-transition temperature. This prediction allows for rapid and reliable selection of high-strength alloys with ductility, as demonstrated for various types of metals and validated experimentally.

Towards stacking fault energy engineering in FCC high entropy alloys

Tasneem Z. Khan et al.

Summary: Stacking Fault Energy (SFE), an intrinsic property of alloys, plays a crucial role in governing the plastic deformation mechanisms in fcc alloys. In this study, a combination of DFT calculations, machine learning, and physics-based models is utilized to predict the SFE in the high-entropy alloy space. The developed model accurately predicts the SFE of arbitrary compositions and enables the exploration of new alloys with interesting mechanical behavior.

Generalization of intrinsic ductile-to-brittle criteria by Pugh and Pettifor for materials with a cubic crystal structure

O. N. Senkov et al.

Summary: The study discovered that the Pugh and Pettifor criteria are identical for materials with cubic crystal structures, both predicting the brittleness and ductility of materials. The Pugh criterion is based on the shear modulus to bulk modulus ratio of a metal, while the Pettifor criterion is based on the difference between single-crystal elastic constants.

Correlations to improve room temperature ductility of refractory complex concentrated alloys

O. N. Senkov et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the room temperature tensile and compressive properties of refractory complex, concentrated alloys (RCCAs) to explore correlations capable of anticipating ductility in this class of structural materials. A new ductility criterion based on the RCCA yield strength was suggested, but more data and research are needed to support this trend. Predictive models for estimating the yield strength in RCCAs could help identify alloys with usable levels of ductility.
