Internal multi-centennial variability of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation simulated by EC-Earth3

Virna L. Meccia et al.

Summary: Researchers have discovered a multi-centennial oscillation of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) under pre-industrial climate conditions. This oscillation, with a period of approximately 150 years and an amplitude of around 6 Sv, significantly affects the atmosphere. The oscillation is driven by the accumulation and release of salinity anomalies in the Arctic, which impact water column stability and deep convection. Sea ice and Arctic oceanic circulation play crucial roles in this process. Interestingly, simulations under a warmer climate do not exhibit these strong AMOC fluctuations.

Identifying the mechanisms of DO-scale oscillations in a GCM: a salt oscillator triggered by the Laurentide ice sheet

Edward Armstrong et al.

Summary: The driver mechanisms of Dansgaard-Oeschger events are uncertain, but this study suggests that variations in the strength of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation driven by North Atlantic salinity fluctuations play a role. A complex ocean-atmosphere-sea-ice feedback mechanism is identified, which maintains the oscillatory behavior observed in the events.

High-latitude precipitation as a driver of multicentennial variability of the AMOC in a climate model of intermediate complexity

Oliver Mehling et al.

Summary: In this study, numerical simulations are used to investigate the centennial-scale variability of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). The results suggest that these oscillations are driven by salinity anomalies from the Arctic Ocean, which can be attributed to changes in high-latitude precipitation. By formulating a three-box model, the mechanism of regular oscillations of the AMOC is qualitatively reproduced. The findings indicate that precipitation minus evaporation (P-E) change in the Arctic could be a physically plausible driver of centennial-scale AMOC variability.

Dansgaard-Oeschger events in climate models: review and baseline Marine Isotope Stage 3 (MIS3) protocol

Irene Malmierca-Vallet et al.

Summary: This paper establishes a protocol for general circulation models used in the IPCC assessments to simulate Dansgaard-Oeschger (D-O) events during the Marine Isotope Stage 3 (MIS3). The study reviews the progress in simulating D-O events in these models and finds that no model exhibits D-O-like behavior under pre-industrial conditions. The paper proposes a baseline protocol for MIS3 and a second freshwater experiment to increase the chance of modeling D-O events.

Effect of Climatic Precession on Dansgaard-Oeschger-Like Oscillations

Yuta Kuniyoshi et al.

Summary: Using the climate model MIROC4m, this study simulates self-sustained oscillations of millennial-scale periodicity in the climate and Atlantic meridional overturning circulation under glacial conditions. The mechanism of these oscillations is examined by considering extreme climatic precession and its impact on boreal seasonality and sea ice thickness.

Atmospheric CO2 control of spontaneous millennial-scale ice age climate oscillations

Summary: The study demonstrates that nonlinear self-sustained climate oscillations can appear spontaneously within specific glacial-level atmospheric CO2 concentrations, with CO2 playing a key role in controlling the relative rates of internal forcing and feedback in the system. These oscillations exist in the Earth system and may be influenced by internal climate variability and external noise-induced transitions.

Millennial-Scale Climate Oscillations Triggered by Deglacial Meltwater Discharge in Last Glacial Maximum Simulations

Yvan M. Rome et al.

Summary: Our limited understanding of millennial-scale climate variability during the last glacial period is attributed to the absence of a reliable modeling framework. In this article, we conduct a series of experiments to study climate shifts triggered by ice-sheet meltwater during the last deglaciation. We find that the climate can oscillate between cold and warm modes, with different regions showing varying sensitivity to meltwater discharge.

A salty deep ocean as a prerequisite for glacial termination

Gregor Knorr et al.

Summary: The study suggests that an increased importance of salt versus temperature stratification in the glacial deep South Atlantic reduces the cooling effect of upwelling waters, leading to amplified surface ocean temperature response in the Southern Ocean during deglaciation. Using a coupled atmosphere-ocean general circulation model, it is demonstrated that deep-ocean salinity stratification stabilizes warm waters in the deep ocean, contributing to rapid Antarctic warming during glacial terminations. Heat stored in the deep ocean due to salinity stratification is found to play a significant role in the warming of Antarctica during deglaciation in the middle to late Pleistocene.

Multicentennial Variability Driven by Salinity Exchanges Between the Atlantic and the Arctic Ocean in a Coupled Climate Model

Weimin Jiang et al.

Summary: The study shows that the multicentennial variability of AMOC is mainly influenced by delayed accumulation and release of freshwater in the Arctic, preceded by salinity-driven density anomalies in the main deep convection regions of the Labrador and Greenland seas. During periods of strong AMOC, reduced sea ice and anomalous currents lead to a slow accumulation of freshwater in the central Arctic. As the Central Arctic freshwater pool reaches the Lincoln Sea, the AMOC weakens and positive salinity anomalies appear.

The PMIP4 Last Glacial Maximum experiments: preliminary results and comparison with the PMIP3 simulations

Masa Kageyama et al.

Summary: The new generation of climate models used for Last Glacial Maximum simulations show a wider range of global average temperatures and precipitation compared to the previous generation. While there are significant differences in individual model simulations, the overall trends are similar. The PMIP4 simulations generally depict a colder and drier global state than the PMIP3-CMIP5 simulations.

Impact of mid-glacial ice sheets on deep ocean circulation and global climate

Summary: The study investigates the impact of southward expansion of Northern Hemisphere ice sheets during glacial periods on global climate and the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). Results show that the ice sheets contribute to global cooling and influence AMOC by affecting sea ice coverage and surface water temperature.
