Analysis of ultrafast magnetization switching dynamics in exchange-coupled ferromagnet-ferrimagnet heterostructures

Debanjan Polley et al.

Summary: Recent observation of helicity-independent all-optical magnetization switching in an exchange-coupled ferromagnet-ferrimagnet heterostructure expands the range and applicability of ultrafast heat-driven magnetization switching. In this study, the element-resolved dynamics of this exchange-coupled system are investigated using a modified three-temperature model. The results show that the switching behavior depends on various factors such as the composition of the ferrimagnet, the Curie temperature of the ferromagnet, and the strength of the Ruderman- Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida exchange-coupling, providing insights for the development of faster and more energy-efficient spintronics devices.

Enhancing the Spin-Orbit Torque Efficiency by the Insertion of a Sub-nanometer β-W Layer

Yaojin Li et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the significant impact of sub-nanometer beta-W intercalation on the spin-orbit torque (SOT) efficiency in alpha-W/Co/Pt samples. The enhancement of damping-like SOT efficiency and the reduction of energy consumption can be achieved by introducing beta-W intercalation.

Tailoring the Switching Efficiency of Magnetic Tunnel Junctions by the Fieldlike Spin-Orbit Torque

Viola Krizakova et al.

Summary: Current-induced spin-orbit torques are versatile for magnetic device switching. The role of the fieldlike torque is debated. Here, we investigate magnetic tunnel junctions with different torque ratios and find that the fieldlike torque can assist or hinder the switching process depending on the orientation of the static in-plane magnetic field. We also discover that the combination of transverse magnetic field and fieldlike torque can accelerate or decelerate the reversal onset. Our findings are supported by micromagnetic simulations and can be applied to different materials. Moreover, we propose device geometries that leverage the fieldlike torque for memory density increase and synaptic weight generation.

MTJ degradation in SOT-MRAM by self-heating-induced diffusion

Simon Van Beek et al.

Summary: In SOT-MRAM, the writing path is independent from the reading path to prevent the impact of MgO breakdown in the MTJ. However, while the SOT track remains stable against electromigration, the MTJ has been observed to fail due to activation of diffusion mechanisms leading to degradation of the free layer and MgO tunnel barrier.

Summary: A new approach for time-resolved measurements of magnetization reversal is presented, showing activation delays in the current-induced switching of GdFeCo, despite high domain-wall velocity. The method is applicable to various current-induced phenomena and can be combined with non-electrical excitations for pump-probe Hall effect measurements.

Interplay of Voltage Control of Magnetic Anisotropy, Spin-Transfer Torque, and Heat in the Spin-Orbit-Torque Switching of Three-Terminal Magnetic Tunnel Junctions

Viola Krizakova et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigates the impact of dual voltage pulses on the switching performance of three-terminal magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) designed for field-free switching by spin-orbit torques (SOTs). Experimental results and micromagnetic modeling show that different effects play a lead role in assisting SOTs in the magnetization-reversal process depending on the pulse duration and MTJ diameter. A compact model is presented to evaluate the impact of each effect due to the MTJ bias on the critical switching parameters.
