Ultrafast tunable lasers using lithium niobate integrated photonics

Viacheslav Snigirev et al.

Summary: Thin-film lithium niobate (LiNbO3) on insulator has enabled various applications in integrated photonics, but the potential of this platform for frequency-agile, narrow-linewidth lasers has not been fully explored. In this study, we present a fast-tuning laser based on a hybrid silicon nitride (Si3N4)-LiNbO3 photonic platform and demonstrate its use in coherent laser ranging. By combining the advantages of LiNbO3 and Si3N4, this platform offers precise lithographic control, mature manufacturing, ultralow loss, and the ability to achieve narrow-linewidth lasing.

Towards Real-World Quantum Networks: A Review

Shi-Hai Wei et al.

Summary: Quantum networks are crucial for quantum information science, enabling applications in quantum communication, computation, metrology, and fundamental tests. The main challenge lies in distributing entangled flying qubits to separate nodes, where quantum interfaces or transducers map the entanglement onto fixed qubits. Extensive efforts over the past two decades have led to significant progress in entangling quantum nodes and building a global quantum network using various physical systems. This review discusses the development of quantum networks and experimental advancements, comparing the potential and merits of systems such as single atoms, cold atomic ensembles, trapped ions, diamonds with nitrogen-vacancy centers, and solid-state hosts doped with rare-earth ions.

Storage and analysis of light-matter entanglement in a fiber-integrated system

Jelena Rakonjac et al.

Summary: The deployment of a full-fledged quantum internet requires finding suitable building blocks for entanglement distribution between remote quantum nodes. In this study, we demonstrate a fiber-integrated quantum memory entangled with a photon at telecommunication wavelength, allowing for stable addressing of the memory. Our analysis using fiber-based interferometers shows significant advancements in integrated storage of light-matter entanglement.

Elimination of noise in optically rephased photon echoes

You-Zhi Ma et al.

Summary: Photon echo is a fundamental tool for manipulating electromagnetic fields, but is limited by spontaneous emission noise. A proposed noiseless photon-echo protocol based on a four-level atomic system demonstrates high storage fidelity in an optical quantum memory setup using a Eu3+:Y2SiO5 crystal. This technique features spin-wave storage, easy operation, and potential for extension to other physical systems.

High-performance quantum entanglement generation via cascaded second-order nonlinear processes

Zichang Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper demonstrates the generation of high-performance entangled photon-pairs in different degrees of freedom from a single piece of fiber pigtailed periodically poled LiNbO3 (PPLN) waveguide. By integrating noise-rejecting filters with the PPLN waveguide, a high coincidence-to-accidental ratio (CAR) was achieved along with quantum characteristics of the entangled photon-pairs in various degrees of freedom.

Summary: The study characterizes the optical coherence and energy-level properties of Tm3+ in a Ti4+ :LiNbO3 waveguide, finding consistency between indiffused Tm-3(+) :Ti-4(+) :LiNbO3 and bulk-doped Tm-3(+) :LiNbO3 crystal properties. These results support the use of rare-earth ions for integrated optical and quantum signal processing, complementing previous research in a narrower parameter space.
