Electrochemical synthesis of propylene from carbon dioxide on copper nanocrystals

Jing Gao et al.

Summary: The electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide to propylene on copper nanocrystals is a promising method for addressing climate concerns. The production rate of propylene is affected by the presence of carbon monoxide, indicating the importance of the coupling between carbon dioxide and *C-2 intermediates. The study also found that the adsorption of key intermediates is favored on Cu(100) and Cu(111) facets of metallic copper nanocrystals.

Uncovering the Electrolyte-Dependent Transport Mechanism of LiO2 in Lithium-Oxygen Batteries

Zhen Jiang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanism of electrolyte-assisted discharge in lithium-oxygen batteries and reveals that the release of LiO2 is energetically favorable in high-DN electrolytes and unfavorable in low-DN electrolytes. Additionally, it is found that LiO2 clusters in DMSO solvents are more likely to dimerize and agglomerate, forming a toroidal shape to maintain system stability.

Structure, Diffusion, and Stability of Lithium Salts in Aprotic Dimethyl Sulfoxide and Acetonitrile Electrolytes

Zhen Jiang et al.

Summary: The development of lithium batteries, including lithium-ion batteries and lithium-air batteries, is a key technological breakthrough in renewable energy storage. However, designing lithium batteries with high specific power and stability remains challenging. This study systematically investigates the solvation structure and thermodynamic stability of three common inorganic Li salts (LiClO4, LiBF4, and LiPF6) and O2 in two aprotic solvents (DMSO and CH3CN) from an atomic viewpoint. The results provide insights into the solvation shells, diffusion coefficients, and stability performances of the Li+ components in the electrolytes, highlighting the importance of selecting suitable Li salts and solvents for optimized battery performance.

Efficient electrocatalytic conversion of CO2 to ethanol enabled by imidazolium-functionalized ionomer confined molybdenum phosphide

Mohammadreza Esmaeilirad et al.

Summary: This study found a catalytic system using molybdenum phosphide nanoparticles covered by imidazolium-functionalized ionomer, which effectively reduces carbon dioxide to ethanol. The imidazolium-functionalized ionomer improves the diffusion of CO2 and balances the water content in the catalyst layer, resulting in higher CO2-to-water ratio and fine-tuning of the electronic properties of the catalyst surface.

Mechanistic Study of the Li-Air Battery with a Co3O4 Cathode and Dimethyl Sulfoxide Electrolyte

Zhen Jiang et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigates the Li-O-2 discharge and charge reactions on the Co3O4-based cathode assisted by DMSO electrolyte. The most stable surface under standard conditions is found to be the Co3O4(100)-O (oxidized) surface, with stable Li+ solvation structure in a tetrahedral Li(DMSO)4(+) shell in the DMSO-based electrolyte. The solution model pathway in the Co3O4(100)-O cathode and DMSO electrolyte system is energetically favorable for the Li-O-2 discharge reaction, providing a low constant overpotential during long-term discharging.
