[FeFe] Hydrogenase: 2-Propanethiolato-Bridged {FeFe} Systems as Electrocatalysts for Hydrogen Production in Acetonitrile-Water

Tashika Agarwal et al.

Summary: Diiron bis(monothiolato)-bridged hydrogenase mimics and their phosphine derivatives were synthesized and investigated for electrocatalytic proton reduction activity in CH3CN-H2O. The electron-donating ability of the phosphines followed the order: dppv>PCy3>PPh3. The catalytic reduction potential shifted towards positive potentials on changing the solvent from pure CH3CN to CH3CN-H2O. An increase in the percentage of water in CH3CN led to the decomposition of certain complexes. No improvement in electrocatalytic currents was observed for certain complexes in CH3CN-H2O.

An unexpected leading role for [Fe2(CO)6(μ-pdt)] in our understanding of [FeFe]-H2ases and the search for clean hydrogen production

Graeme Hogarth

Summary: When Ziegler and Korav accidentally prepared [Fe2(CO)6(& mu;-pdt)] in 1979, they couldn't have imagined its significance in understanding and replicating the function of a 4-billion-year-old enzyme class, [FeFe]-H2ases, and its potential for clean hydrogen production. This review highlights the progress from chance discovery to innovative application, bringing organometallic chemistry closer to the Origins of Life. The focus is on substitution chemistry that allows for the tuning of both steric and electronic properties, resulting in complexes that closely mimic the six different states of [FeFe]-H2ases and contribute to a viable catalytic cycle. However, the search for derivatives active in hydrogen oxidation, a key process in hydrogen fuel cells, remains challenging.
