Time Resolved Measurements of pH in Aqueous Magnesium-Air Batteries during Discharge and Its Impact for Future Applications

Tobias Braun et al.

Summary: The influence of the electrochemical behavior on the pH of the electrolyte in aqueous magnesium air batteries has been investigated. The pH of the electrolyte was found to increase rapidly to a maximum and then slowly decrease to an equilibrium value during discharge. Oversaturation of Mg(OH)2 at the peak pH led to precipitation, which affected the efficiency and voltage of the cell.

Nickel-Platinum Alloy Nanocrystallites with High-Index Facets as Highly Effective Core Catalyst for Lithium Sulfur Batteries

Zhen-Yu Wang et al.

Summary: This study introduces concave-nanocubic nickel-platinum (Ni-Pt) alloys bounded by high-index facets as the core catalyst for sulfur in Li-S batteries. By modulating the exposed facets, the catalytic activity of sulfur is enhanced, leading to high reversible capacity and low damping cycling in Li-S batteries.

Bifunctional Pt-IrO2 Catalysts for the Oxygen Evolution and Oxygen Reduction Reactions: Alloy Nanoparticles versus Nanocomposite Catalysts

Jia Du et al.

Summary: This study compares the electrocatalytic performance of conventional PtxIry alloy nanoparticles with Pt-IrO2 nanocomposites for bifunctional ORR/OER catalysts. Results show that the Pt-IrO2 nanocomposite concept offers advantages but also some disadvantages, especially after exposure to accelerated degradation tests. Additionally, all tested catalysts experience a decline in the Ir/Pt ratio after ADT treatment, highlighting limitations and challenges for fuel cell startup-shutdown protection and URFC stability.

Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) mechanism under alkaline and acidic conditions

Qiuhua Liang et al.

Summary: Density functional theory (DFT) simulations of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are important for understanding the limitations of water splitting, but the differences between experimental conditions under alkaline and calculations under acidic environments require a pH-dependent correction factor. This paper derives a theory to simulate the OER based on the alkaline reaction mechanism and compares mechanisms for alkaline and acidic OER catalysis, explaining the differences between experimental and calculated results.
