Photocurrent-Polarity-Switching Photoelectrochemical Biosensor for Switching Spatial Distance Electroactive Tags

Ruijin Zeng et al.

Summary: This study presents a photocurrent-polarity-switching-based photoelectrochemical (PEC) biosensing platform for ultrasensitive microRNA-21 (miR-21) detection. Double-shelled Cu-doped ZnS nanocages (NCs)-Au nanoparticles (NPs) were used as photoactive materials to modulate the positional configurations of methylene blue (MB) and ferrocene (Fc) through target-triggered catalytic hairpin assembly (CHA). The distance-controllable strategy effectively improved sensing specificity and sensitivity by eliminating false-positive and false-negative signals. The proposed PEC biosensor demonstrated satisfying photocurrent responses and a low limit of detection (LOD) for miR-21 detection.

Photoactive conjugated microporous polymer@C60 with quencher on tailed Y-triangular DNA structure for high-performance signal-off photoelectrochemical biosensing

Ying Jiang et al.

Summary: In this study, a conjugated microporous polymer (CMP) decorated C60 (CMP@C60) was synthesized, which exhibited high photo-electric conversion efficiency. The repeated donor-acceptor (D-A) pi electron unit within one molecule of CMP on C60 improved the mobility of photogenerated carriers and reduced electron-hole recombination. A sensitive signal-off sensing platform was designed based on the high-performance of CMP@C60 for lead ion (Pb2+) assay. The platform utilized quencher methylene blue (MB) interacting on efficient long tailed Y-triangular DNA structure (LYTD) to significantly depress the signal for sensitive detection of Pb2+.

Selective Chemical Reactivity of Non-Fullerene Acceptor for Photoelectrochemical Bioassay of Urease Activity

Runshi Xiao et al.

Summary: In this study, a sensitive photoelectrochemical (PEC) biosensor was developed using non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) to monitor urease activity. The organic building blocks of the NFAs showed selective chemical reactivity with urease, resulting in the formation of a depressive photoelectric response. The linear relationship between the recession of photoelectric performance and the concentration of urease demonstrated good sensitivity and selectivity. The successful detection of urease activity in human saliva samples suggests the promising potential of NFA-based PEC biosensors for clinical applications.

Engineering the microenvironment of electron transport layers with nickle single-atom sites for boosting photoelectrochemical performance

Ying Qin et al.

Summary: Advancements in rational design of semiconductor-electrocatalyst photoelectrodes have the potential to improve energy conversion and quantitative analysis, but limited understanding of elementary processes is hindered by complex interfaces involved in semiconductor/electrocatalyst/electrolyte systems. To address this, researchers have developed carbon-supported nickel single atoms (Ni SA@C) as an electron transport layer with catalytic sites of Ni-N-4 and Ni-N2O2. This approach demonstrates the combined effect of photogenerated electron extraction and surface electron escape ability in the photocathode system, providing insights into enhancing photoelectrochemical performance.
