Electrochemical affinity biosensors are rapidly evolving and becoming increasingly important in our daily lives. They combine their intrinsic attributes with advances in technology to offer a wide range of opportunities and applications. This perspective provides an updated and critical view of these biosensors and discusses the challenges and future directions they face.
Electrochemical affinity biosensors are evolving at breakneckspeed,strengthening and colonizing more and more niches and drawing unimaginableroadmaps that increasingly make them protagonists of our daily lives.They achieve this by combining their intrinsic attributes with thoseacquired by leveraging the significant advances that occurred in (nano)materialstechnology, bio(nano)materials and nature-inspired receptors, geneediting and amplification technologies, and signal detection and processingtechniques. The aim of this Perspective is to provide, with the supportof recent representative and illustrative literature, an updated andcritical view of the repertoire of opportunities, innovations, andapplications offered by electrochemical affinity biosensors fueledby the key alliances indicated. In addition, the imminent challengesthat these biodevices must face and the new directions in which theyare envisioned as key players are discussed.
