From Nanoalloy to Nano-Laminated Interfaces for Highly Stable Alkali-Metal Anodes

Parham Pirayesh et al.

Summary: Metal anodes are highly desirable for next-generation batteries due to their high capacity and low potential. However, challenges such as dendrite growth and volume change hinder their practical applications. This study demonstrates the use of organic and inorganic hybrid interfaces to achieve stable electrochemical performance for Li- and Na-metal anodes. The optimized thicknesses of the nanoalloy interfaces differ for Li- and Na-metal anodes, and the mechanical stability of the interfaces influences the electrochemical performance. This research establishes a fundamental understanding and connection between mechanical properties and electrochemical performance for alkali-metal anodes.

Assessing Coulombic Efficiency in Lithium Metal Anodes

Abdolkhaled Mohammadi et al.

Summary: Although lithium metal and anode-free rechargeable batteries (LMBs and AFBs) have great potential as energy storage systems, the formation of high-surface lithium deposits during plating-stripping cycles hinders their practical applications. Efforts have been made to prevent this issue, such as electrolyte modification and electrode surface modification. However, the evaluation of battery performance using Coulombic efficiency (CE) is challenging due to various parameters. This study aims to reveal the interplay of several overlooked parameters and provide insights into the evaluation methods for LMBs and AFBs.

Dynamic Galvanic Corrosion of Working Lithium Metal Anode Under Practical Conditions

Jun-Fan Ding et al.

Summary: This contribution describes a dynamic galvanic corrosion mechanism that leads to the generation of an extended solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) on the copper substrate during the Li removal process. The extent of dynamic galvanic corrosion is influenced by three critical factors: the total step length of Li stripping, the degradation speed of dynamic corrosion current (i(corrosion)), and the SEI chemistry.

Unraveling the heterogeneity of solid electrolyte interphase kinetically affecting lithium electrodeposition on lithium metal anode

Mengyuan Zhou et al.

Summary: The correlation between the failure behavior of solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) and the morphology of lithium deposition is investigated through a quantitative electrochemical-mechanical model. The results show that component uniformity plays the most important role in the initial SEI failure and uneven lithium deposition. Experimentally improving component uniformity benefits SEI stability and uniform lithium electrodeposition for lithium metal anodes (LMA).

Homogeneous and mechanically stable solid-electrolyte interphase enabled by trioxane-modulated electrolytes for lithium metal batteries

Qian-Kui Zhang et al.

Summary: The solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) in lithium (Li) metal batteries is often heterogeneous and mechanically unstable. In this study, a bilayer SEI with improved homogeneity and mechanical stability is designed using trioxane-modulated electrolytes. The coin cell with the tailored bilayer SEI achieves 430 cycles, while the cell with an anion-derived SEI undergoes only 200 cycles. The development of a homogeneous and mechanically stable SEI expands the cyclability of high-energy-density lithium metal batteries.

Robust Transport: An Artificial Solid Electrolyte Interphase Design for Anode-Free Lithium-Metal Batteries

Jinran Sun et al.

Summary: One of the most challenging issues in the implementation of high-energy-density anode-free lithium-metal batteries is the capacity attenuation caused by the mechanical degradation of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). In this study, a composite artificial SEI with integrated heterostructure of lithium fluoride (LiF) and lithium phosphorus oxynitride (LiPON) is developed to achieve high ionic conductivity and fracture toughness. The implementation of this artificial SEI significantly increases the cycling lifetime of the batteries by over 250%.

Summary: Promoting the industry applications of high-energy Li metal batteries (LMBs) is crucial for the electrification and decarbonization of our society. However, the time-dependent storage aging of Ah-level Li metal pouch cells, which is an important practical indicator, has not been fully understood. This study investigates the storage behavior and aging mechanism of Ah-level NCM811||Li pouch cells during long-term storage, revealing the significant capacity loss and proposing principles for alleviating aging. The findings bridge academia and industry and enhance our understanding of storage aging in LMBs, contributing to the realistic application of high-energy batteries.

A Facile Potential Hold Method for Fostering an Inorganic Solid-Electrolyte Interphase for Anode-Free Lithium-Metal Batteries

Woochul Shin et al.

Summary: Anode-free lithium batteries are considered the ultimate form of high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries. However, irreversible lithium loss during cycling degrades the overall cell performance. To mitigate this, a robust solid-electrolyte interface on the anode current collector is necessary. This study demonstrates that applying a potential hold during the first charge can guide more salt-derived decomposition on the anode interface, resulting in improved lithium Coulombic efficiency and reduced capacity fade.

Molecular Insights into the Structure and Property Variation of the Pressure-Induced Solid Electrolyte Interphase on a Lithium Metal Anode

Mengyuan Zhou et al.

Summary: This study investigates the structure and property variation of pressure-induced solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) using molecular dynamics simulations. The results show that pressure promotes SEI structure delamination and reduces porosity, leading to the formation of a thin and dense SEI. Furthermore, the study establishes a phase diagram considering the effects of pressure and salt concentration, which provides guidance for optimizing the mechanical and transport properties of pressure-induced SEI for high-performance lithium metal batteries (LMBs).

Corrosion of lithium metal anodes during calendar ageing and its microscopic origins

David T. Boyle et al.

Summary: Rechargeable lithium metal batteries must have a long cycle life and calendar life. The loss of capacity during calendar ageing is caused by chemical corrosion of Li and the continuous growth of the solid electrolyte interphase. Functional electrolytes must minimize the rate of solid electrolyte interphase growth and the surface area of electrodeposited Li metal to ensure long battery life.
