Analysis, prioritization and strategic planning of flood mitigation projects based on sustainability dimensions and a spatial/value AHP-GIS system

Marina T. Aidinidou et al.

Summary: This study aims to establish criteria for comprehensive urban flood risk assessment and create a prioritization map of flood mitigation projects. The proposed model is based on spatial data and expert opinions, and is used for flood vulnerability assessment and project prioritization. In addition, a spatial sensitivity analysis is conducted to discuss the effects on the resulting hierarchy.

Users? vulnerability and exposure in Public Open Spaces (squares): A novel way for accounting them in multi-risk scenarios

Enrico Quagliarini et al.

Summary: This study proposes a method for performing local-scale analyses on the use patterns of public open spaces (POSs) using remote analysis tools and easy-to-apply surveys. The methodology is assessed using a sample of 56 squares in historic Italian cities and provides a typological characterization of the squares sample, as well as a basis for assessing users' vulnerability and exposure scenarios. These typological scenarios can be used to support rapid risk assessment actions in POSs by safety designers and local authority technicians, and can be input into simulation-based analyses.

A multi-hazard framework for spatial-temporal impact analysis

Silvia De Angeli et al.

Summary: This paper presents a five-step conceptual framework for analyzing the impacts of multi-hazard interactions on the built environment. The framework is based on the systematic analysis of spatial and temporal evolution of hazards to identify potential impact interactions. It is applicable to a wide range of hazards and considers both hazard and impact interactions, as well as residual damage and recovery processes.

Risk-based flood adaptation assessment for large-scale buildings in coastal cities using cloud computing

Yu Han et al.

Summary: An adaptation framework for community strategies at the building level was proposed, which relied on cloud computing for evaluation. By incorporating multiple sources of model uncertainties and randomly generated storm surges in each year of simulation, four adaptation scenarios were designed based on a case study in Miami-Dade County, Florida. Sensitivity analysis indicated a positive linear relationship between community flood risk reduction and total community adaptation costs under the life-cycle cost-benefit (LCCB) model.

A novel spatiotemporal multi-attribute method for assessing flood risks in urban spaces under climate change and demographic scenarios

Lucas Borges Leal da Silva et al.

Summary: This paper presents a new decision model (NSMAUT) for managing flood risks in urban areas under climate and demographic changes. The model analyzes flood risks under five attributes related to environmental, financial, human, mobility, and social concerns. The findings provide decision-makers with methods to control and monitor risk conditions, enabling them to make decisions for adapting cities to future flood events.

Alleviation approach for flash flood risk reduction in urban dwellings: A case study of Fifth District, Egypt

Mohamed Wahba et al.

Summary: Flash floods present a significant challenge in the 21st century. This research focused on studying and mitigating the impact of flash floods on the Fifth District in Egypt. The study examined the risk levels at a community scale and the effects on buildings. Mitigation measures, such as underground tanks, were implemented successfully, reducing water depth and collecting rainfall water for reuse.

Optimality of flood influencing factors for flood hazard mapping: An evaluation of two multi-criteria decision-making methods

Rofiat Bunmi Mudashiru et al.

Summary: Mapping flood hazards is crucial for flood management. This study used Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Fuzzy-AHP (F-AHP) methods to identify flood hazard areas by considering multiple flood influencing factors. The results showed that flood vulnerability factors had the highest influence on the generated flood hazard maps. The methodology was validated and deemed suitable for flood risk analysis and management.

Summary: Floods are a common and harmful natural disaster worldwide. This study utilized GIS-MCA techniques to analyze flood-prone areas in the Dadu River basin in China, and validated the scientific and accurate nature of the approach. The findings have important implications for flood management and risk decision-making.

Urban Flood Modeling Application: Assess the Effectiveness of Building Regulation in Coping with Urban Flooding Under Precipitation Uncertainty

M. M. M. Piyumi et al.

Summary: The research evaluated the effectiveness of planning and building regulations in managing urban flooding under different precipitation scenarios. Plot coverage regulations were found effective during average rainfall events, while LID-based infrastructure solutions performed well during moderate rainfall events. However, none of these solutions were adequate during extreme rainfall events. Practitioners favored the adoption of green roofs and plot coverage regulations for managing more frequent average rainfall events and maintaining the balance of urban hydrological pathways.

From single- to multi-hazard vulnerability and risk in Historic Urban Areas: a literature review

Pilar Baquedano Julia et al.

Summary: Recent research has focused on assessing the effects of individual hazards on urban areas, but evaluating the cumulative impacts of multiple hazards has not yet become mainstream in research and urban management practice. This paper aims to pave the way for future multi-hazard vulnerability and risk assessment methodologies for Historic Urban Areas by reviewing relevant methodologies proposed in seismic, flood, and fire assessment.

How urban layout and pedestrian evacuation behaviours can influence flood risk assessment in riverine historic built environments

Gabriele Bernardini et al.

Summary: This study compares how including or excluding pedestrian evacuation behaviors can affect flood risk assessment and emergency strategies evaluation in riverine historic built environments. Results show that considering or not considering pedestrian evacuation behaviors have similar trends on risk indexes at the macroscale, but differences exist at the microscale. Emergency strategies such as sheltering can significantly decrease risk for the whole built environment compared to leaving the flood-affected area.
