Energy mix with technological innovation to abate carbon emission: fresh evidence from Mexico applying wavelet tools and spectral causality

Md Emran Hossain et al.

Summary: The issue of global warming arises from climate change, which has led scientists to focus on cleaner energy sources. Among clean sources, renewables and nuclear energy have gained significant attention from policymakers. However, the importance of nuclear energy in reducing CO2 emissions remains uncertain, requiring further research. Therefore, this study examines the relationship between energy mix, economic growth, technological innovation, and CO2 emissions in Mexico from 1980 to 2019, using the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model, to address the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals-7 (affordable clean energy) & 13 (climate change mitigation). The findings suggest that the use of renewable and nuclear energy, as well as technological innovation, can help reduce CO2 emissions, while fossil fuel consumption and economic expansion contribute to higher emissions. The study supports the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) phenomenon in Mexico and provides reliable long-term estimates through FMOLS and DOLS tests. Wavelet coherence analysis confirms consistency across different time scales, and the spectral causality approach reveals significant causal associations between the variables at various frequencies. Therefore, Mexico needs to transition its energy mix to renewables and nuclear in order to achieve SDGs 7 and 13 and promote an environmentally friendly ecosystem.

The Impact of Environmental Regulation and Carbon Emissions on Green Technology Innovation from the Perspective of Spatial Interaction: Empirical Evidence from Urban Agglomeration in China

Xiaowen Wang et al.

Summary: In recent years, environmental regulation and green technology innovation have become a top research topic in academia as important means of reducing carbon emissions. Existing studies have investigated the phenomenon of green technology innovation responses to carbon emissions, but there is less literature explaining this phenomenon from a spatial perspective and exploring the effect of the joint mechanism of carbon emissions and environmental regulation on green technology innovation. This study used a spatial econometric model to analyze the impact of environmental regulation and carbon emissions on green technology innovation in the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration, and found that green technology innovation shows a trend of high in the east and low in the west, with spatial autocorrelation. Additionally, it was observed that there is a spatial spillover effect of environmental regulation and carbon emissions on green technology innovation in the surrounding areas, and a substitution effect exists between environmental regulation and carbon emissions. The findings of this study provide insights for policy recommendations.

Green technology technology innovations, urban innovation environment and CO2 emission reduction in China: Fresh evidence from a partially linear functional-coefficient panel model

Boqiang Lin et al.

Summary: Green technology innovations play an important role in balancing economic growth and environmental governance. However, there is limited empirical research on the relationship between green technology innovations and CO2 emissions, particularly in developing countries like China. This study examines panel data from 264 prefecture-level cities in China from 2006 to 2017, and finds that the impact of green technology innovations on CO2 emissions varies across different types of cities. It also shows that green technology innovations can contribute to CO2 emission reduction after 2010, indirectly through industrial structure upgrading. The study further suggests that the marginal effect of green technologies on CO2 emissions is influenced by the urban innovation environment and the human capital level of a city.
