Effects of thymol concentration on postharvest diseases and quality of blueberry fruit

Jie Ding et al.

Summary: This study compared the effects of different concentrations of thymol on postharvest disease and storage potential of blueberry fruit. The results showed that treatment with 10-30 mg/L thymol was more effective in controlling Aspergillus niger-induced decay. Furthermore, blueberry fruit treated with 20 mg/L thymol retained the highest quality in terms of firmness, total soluble solids content, and acceptability score.

Magnolol inhibits gray mold on postharvest fruit by inducing autophagic activity of Botrytis cinerea

Xiaomin Cui et al.

Summary: This study found that magnolol has shown efficacy in inhibiting the growth and virulence of Botrytis cinerea by activating autophagic activity, damaging mitochondrial structures, and accumulating ROS. This resulted in impaired membrane integrity, reduced cell vitality, and ultimately decreased mycelial growth and virulence.

Synthesis and properties of core-shell thymol-loaded zein/shellac nanoparticles by coaxial electrospray as edible coatings

Yaowen Liu et al.

Summary: A coaxial electrospray process was employed to produce nanoparticles encapsulating thymol within a core-shell of zein and shellac. The resulting nanoparticles showed high encapsulation efficiency, thermal stability, and antimicrobial activity, with potential applications in food preservation. Additionally, these nanoparticles significantly extended the shelf life of fresh-cut cantaloupe compared to control groups.

Main diseases in postharvest blueberries, conventional and eco-friendly control methods: A review

Surelys Ramos Bell et al.

Summary: Blueberry is a crop with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, but it is susceptible to postharvest diseases caused by fungi and bacteria. Various methods, including chemical, physical, and biological, are used to prevent and decrease these diseases. Alternative methods such as modified atmospheres, UV radiation, chitosan, essential oils, and microbial antagonists have been studied to minimize harm to human health and the environment caused by synthetic fungicides.

Natural occurrence of Alternaria mycotoxins in wheat and potential of reducing associated risks using magnolol

Dongmei Jiang et al.

Summary: The study analyzed wheat samples from Hebei Province, China for Alternaria mycotoxins (AOH, AME, and TeA) and found that most Alternaria strains produce multiple toxins, with TeA being the predominant mycotoxin. Magnolol showed antifungal and antimycotoxigenic activity against Alternaria, suggesting it could be developed as a natural fungicide for wheat.
