Encapsulation of polyphenols in pH-responsive micelles self-assembled from octenyl-succinylated curdlan oligosaccharide and its effect on the gut microbiota

Huan Li et al.

Summary: An amphiphilic polymer based on octenyl succinic anhydride-modified curdlan oligosaccharide (MCOS) was synthesized, which self-assembled into spherical micelles with pH-responsive property. It exhibited high loading capacity for polyphenols and showed sustained release in the simulated intestinal fluid, demonstrating potential for colon-targeted delivery of hydrophobic polyphenols.

Synthesis of branched β-1,3-glucan oligosaccharide with narrow degree of polymerization by fungi co-cultivation

Jianrong Wu et al.

Summary: The study focused on co-cultivating fungi and Trichoderma to produce branched beta-1,3-glucan oligosaccharides through fermentation. The resulting products showed significant antioxidant activity, with bO beta G from S. commune demonstrating superior performance compared to that from S. rolfsii.

Sulfonated and Carboxymethylated β-Glucan Derivatives with Inhibitory Activity against Herpes and Dengue Viruses

Jose Louzinho Lopes et al.

Summary: By introducing carboxyl and sulfonate groups into β-D-glucan, researchers attempted to improve its antiviral activity against enveloped viruses. The results showed that sulfonated-carboxymethylated derivatives could inhibit herpes virus, while their inhibition of dengue virus was weaker, indicating varying resistance of different viruses to anionic β-D-glucans. Comparing with a previous study, the presence of carboxymethyl groups might have a negative impact on antiviral activity.

Enzymatic production of prebiotic oligosaccharides

Carlos Vera et al.

Summary: Prebiotics, such as non-digestible oligosaccharides (NDOs), are health promoting functional food ingredients that are extracted from natural sources or enzymatically synthesized. Enzymatic production of NDOs has become the preferred choice at large scale due to the complexity of chemical synthesis, with impressive advances in enzyme biocatalysis allowing for their production under harsh conditions.

Metabolic profiles of oligosaccharides derived from four microbial polysaccharides by faecal inocula from type 2 diabetes patients

Jingjing Xu et al.

Summary: In vitro digestion of curdlan, pullulan, xanthan gum, and gellan gum oligosaccharides showed resistance to simulated digestive fluids, and fermentation with healthy subjects and type 2 diabetes patients' faecal microbiota demonstrated varied effects on gut microbiota and metabolites production, with significant increases seen in Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus species abundance and short-chain fatty acid production in COS fermentation. The study highlights the potential of COS, POS, XGOS, and GGOS intervention in gut microbiota reconstruction and metabolism modulation.

Comparison of Different Soluble Dietary Fibers during the In Vitro Fermentation Process

Junying Bai et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of different types of soluble dietary fibers on short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) biosynthesis in a simulated colon. Results show that different fibers lead to distinct metabolic profiles in SCFAs and organic acids. Microbial community structure also varies among experimental groups.

Acetate differentially regulates IgA reactivity to commensal bacteria

Tadashi Takeuchi et al.

Summary: This study found that the gut microbial metabolite acetate not only increases IgA production in the colon, but also alters the ability of IgA to bind to specific microorganisms. Acetate orchestrates interactions between epithelial and immune cells, induces microbially stimulated CD4 T cells to support T-cell-dependent IgA production, and changes the localization of these bacteria within the colon.
