Development and validation of a condition-specific quality of life instrument for adults with esophageal atresia: the SQEA questionnaire

Chantal A. ten Kate et al.

Summary: This study developed and validated a specific questionnaire (SQEA) to assess health-related quality of life in adults with esophageal atresia. The questionnaire showed good feasibility, reliability, and validity. It is able to discriminate disease burden and serves as an interesting signaling tool for clinicians to identify more severely affected patients.

Patient-reported outcome measures in pediatric surgery-A systematic review

Anne-Sophie Besner et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to explore the use of PROMs in pediatric surgery and identify gaps and areas for improvement. The study found that disease-specific PROMs are predominantly used in pediatric surgery, but validated and individualized tools are lacking. Future efforts are needed to develop better tools that meet the needs of patients and families.

Psychometric Performance of a Condition-Specific Quality-of-Life Instrument for Dutch Children Born with Esophageal Atresia

Chantal A. ten Kate et al.

Summary: A condition-specific instrument to assess quality of life of children born with esophageal atresia was developed and evaluated in the Netherlands. The Dutch-translated questionnaires showed good reliability and validity, although feasibility was affected by some questions not being applicable to individual children. Cross-cultural validation studies and implementation-evaluation in different countries are needed.

Quality of life after esophageal replacement in children

Gabriele Gallo et al.

Summary: Patients with long gap esophageal atresia who underwent esophageal replacement surgery had comparable quality of life scores in digestion, general, and health-related aspects to healthy controls. Young adults showed poorer physical functioning but better social functioning. Postoperative morbidity did not appear to significantly affect patients' quality of life.

Risk Factors of Early Mortality and Morbidity in Esophageal Atresia with Distal Tracheoesophageal Fistula: A Population-Based Cohort Study

Rony Sfeir et al.

Summary: This study identified risk factors for early mortality and morbidity in patients with distal esophageal atresia-tracheoesophageal fistula. Low birth weight, associated cardiac abnormalities, prenatal diagnosis, complications, and surgical difficulties were found to be associated with mortality and hospital length of stay. Complications before 1 year and initial hospital length of stay were predictive factors for dependency on nutritional support at 1 year of age.

Longitudinal Health Status and Quality of Life After Esophageal Atresia Repair

Chantal A. Ten Kate et al.

Summary: The self-reported health status of children with esophageal atresia improved between 8 and 12 years, while their quality of life tended to decline. Proxy-reported health status tended to improve over time. It is recommended to consider health status and quality of life as separate concepts when evaluating the burden of disease.

Mortality from gastrointestinal congenital anomalies at 264 hospitals in 74 low-income, middle-income, and high-income countries: a multicentre, international, prospective cohort study

Naomi J. Wright et al.

Summary: The study compared the outcomes of the seven most common gastrointestinal congenital anomalies in low-income, middle-income, and high-income countries, finding the highest mortality rates in low-income countries. Factors associated with mortality included sepsis, American Society of Anesthesiologists score, lack of surgical safety checklist, and unavailability of ventilation or parenteral nutrition when needed. Providing parenteral nutrition and using central catheters were associated with lower mortality rates.

Summary: The study demonstrates that the Turkish versions of the EA-QOL questionnaires are feasible, valid, and reliable in assessing condition-specific HRQOL in EA children. The questionnaires showed good feasibility, satisfactory internal consistency, and achieved known-group validity and concurrent validity. Correlations between EA-QOL total scores and PedsQL-4.0 total scores supported convergent validity.
