Parametric analysis on the critical oscillation point of a free piston Stirling engine with a nonlinear load

Pengfan Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, a numerical model of a gamma-type free piston Stirling engine (gamma-FPSE) with a nonlinear load is developed and experimentally validated. The influence of different parameters on the critical oscillation point of the FPSE is investigated, and a dimensionless parameter delta is proposed to define this critical state. The results show that when delta is equal to 1, the FPSE reaches the state of critical oscillation, where the power generated by self-oscillation of the nonlinear load equals the sum of power dissipated by linear damping and pressure drop. Furthermore, the effects of average pressure, heating temperature, and spring stiffness of the displacer and power piston on the oscillation are also studied.

Performance simulation by a nonlinear thermodynamic model for a Free Piston Stirling Engine with a linear generator

Mahdi Majidniya et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the combination of an RE-1000 Free Piston Stirling Engine (FPSE) and a Permanent Magnet Linear Synchronous Machine (PMLSM). A nonlinear thermodynamic model of the FPSE was developed and validated, and the PMLSM was also modeled. By modifying velocity parameters, the optimum operating point with maximum system efficiency was found.

Design and analysis of a free-piston stirling engine for space nuclear power reactor

Zhiwen Dai et al.

Summary: The study proposes a 20 kW FPSE for space nuclear power reactors by analyzing requirements and developing a code for performance evaluation. Results show that reducing pressure shell thickness significantly improves output power and system efficiency, while increasing compression ratio leads to a proportional increase in efficiency. This study provides valuable theoretical support for the design and analysis of FPSEs for space nuclear power reactors.
