Fiber Bragg grating refractive index sensor based on double D-shaped fiber

Chetna Upadhyay et al.

Summary: This paper proposes and investigates a simple and highly sensitive method using a double D-shaped fiber Bragg grating (DDSF) for refractive index measurements of glucose solution. The operating principle is based on the evanescent wave interaction of propagating light with the surrounding external environment, resulting in a shift of the Bragg wavelength. The wavelength shift is measured when the refractive index of the external medium changes, showing a good linear relationship.

Summary: A hybrid cascade strain sensor based on Vernier effect, combining Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) and Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI), is proposed to solve the common problems of low extinction ratio (ER) and high temperature cross-sensitivity. The use of a long single-mode fiber (SMF) separates the two interferometers, with MZI as the reference arm and FPI as the sensing arm, in order to increase ER and reduce optical loss. The sensor has shown high strain sensitivity and low temperature sensitivity, with potential applications in strain sensing and magnetic field measurement.

Biopolymer-Based Hydrogels for Harvesting Water from Humid Air: A Review

Simeng Li et al.

Summary: Despite the increasing water demand caused by the growing global population and hydroclimatic factors, new sources of water must be identified and utilized. Biopolymer-based hydrogels have become a sustainable and inexpensive solution for capturing moisture from humid air. This review discusses recent advances in atmospheric water harvesting hydrogels based on cellulose, chitosan, and/or other biopolymers, and their applications in agriculture. Developing a cost-effective hydrogel-based water harvesting/supply system could help alleviate water stress in arid and semi-arid regions, where agriculture consumes a significant amount of water.

Optimal etching process and cladding dimension for improved coating of porous hemispherical ZnO nanostructure on FBG humidity sensor

Muhammad Arif Riza et al.

Summary: This study investigates the humidity sensing performance of fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) etched with different diameters. Using chemical etching and coating techniques, a ZnO-HMT coating was successfully produced and applied to silica-based uniform FBGs. Optical spectrum analyzer results showed wavelength shifts of 0.0004 nm/%RH and a linearity of approximately 98% for samples etched for 10 minutes. The sensitivity of the sensor improved by 20%-30% compared to the uncoated version of FBG. It can be concluded that the FBG sensing performance can be improved to a certain extent through etching with zinc-based coatings, but thinner cladding may not be suitable in conjunction with zinc-based nanostructures.
