Safety and tolerability of topical polyhexamethylene biguanide: a randomised clinical trial in healthy adult volunteers

Vincenzo Papa et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the safety and tolerability of Polyhexamethyl biguanide (PHMB) in the treatment of Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK). The results showed that DLAE occurred in the treatment process of 0.06% and 0.08% concentrations of PHMB, but these adverse events were resolved within a short period of time. There was no significant trend in the incidence of other adverse events associated with increasing concentrations of PHMB. These findings are reassuring for patients using 0.02% PHMB.

Statins Induce Actin Cytoskeleton Disassembly and an Apoptosis-Like Process in Acanthamoeba spp.

Ruben L. Rodriguez-Exposito et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the in vitro antiamoebic activity of three third-generation statins against Acanthamoeba. The results showed that the tested statins were able to induce programmed cell death in the treated amoebae. Additionally, they caused DNA condensation, collapse in the mitochondrial membrane potential, reduction in ATP levels, and disorganization of the cytoskeleton.

The effects of neutrophil-generated hypochlorous acid and other hypohalous acids on host and pathogens

Agnes Ulfig et al.

Summary: Neutrophils play a crucial role in protecting the body against infections by killing pathogens through phagocytosis and the release of hypohalous acids. The formation of hypohalous acids by myeloperoxidase during the oxidative burst is a key mechanism in neutrophil antimicrobial activity. However, these acids can also impact bacterial survival strategies and modulate the immune response in the host system.

The Role of Anterior Chamber Depth on Post-operative Refractive Error After Phacovitrectomy

Gabriel Katz et al.

Summary: Phacovitrectomy has lower post-operative refraction accuracy compared to cataract surgery, potentially requiring adjustments to pre-operative calculations. There is no change in axial length post-surgery, but a significant increase in pre-operative ACD. Different vitreous fillings do not impact refractive error.
