Optical detection of microplastics in water

Ahmet H. Iri et al.

Summary: Plastic pollution poses a significant threat to marine ecosystems, with the need for low-cost, portable microplastic detection systems becoming increasingly important. A prototype device based on an optical system has been developed, costing less than $370, capable of detecting microplastics in water at concentrations below 0.015% w/v. The designed portable device is expected to be widely used globally to monitor microplastic content in a more convenient and cost-effective manner.

Potential human health risks due to environmental exposure to nano-and microplastics and knowledge gaps: A scoping review

Arifur Rahman et al.

Summary: Microplastics are an emerging global environmental contaminant that may have negative impacts on human health through various pathways such as metabolic disturbances, neurotoxicity, and increased cancer risk. Currently, little is known about the effects of microplastics on human health, and further research is needed to quantify their impacts and pathogenesis.

Combined microwave and laser Rayleigh scattering diagnostics for pin-to-pin nanosecond discharges

Xingxing Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, the temporal decay of electrons produced by an atmospheric pin-to-pin nanosecond discharge was measured using microwave Rayleigh scattering (MRS) and laser Rayleigh scattering (LRS) techniques. It was found that a variation in the local gas density during the electron decay affects the decay rate, with the local gas density recovering to ambient levels about 1 ms after discharge. This hybrid diagnostic technique can be applied to a wide range of atmospheric-pressure microplasmas where variations in gas number density are expected.
