Improving access for and experience of transgender and non-binary patients in clinical research: Insights from a transgender patient focus group and targeted literature reviews

Rosamund Round et al.

Summary: There is a lack of clinical trials reporting the inclusion of transgender and non-binary individuals. Through literature searches and patient advisory council meetings, this study identified challenges faced by these communities in healthcare access and clinical research, and developed guidelines to promote inclusivity. Only a small percentage of published clinical trial articles reported the participation of transgender or non-binary patients. Further research on drug dosing, drug interactions, and regulatory guidance is recommended to create transgender and non-binary patient-friendly clinical trial processes.

Sex Differences in Neurodegeneration: The Role of the Immune System in Humans

Chloe Lopez-Lee et al.

Summary: Growing evidence suggests that immune dysfunction plays a significant role in the etiology of neurodegenerative diseases, many of which exhibit notable sex differences. Understanding sex-specific immune activity in the central nervous system can help explain downstream sex differences in diseases like multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Recognizing and studying these sex differences is important for improving clinical and translational research efforts, and further analyses may uncover novel disease mechanisms for better treatment outcomes in both sexes.

Female Sex Is a Risk Factor Associated with Long-Term Post-COVID Related-Symptoms but Not with COVID-19 Symptoms: The LONG-COVID-EXP-CM Multicenter Study

Cesar Fernandez-de-las-Penas et al.

Summary: This study investigated the differences in COVID-19 related symptoms and post-COVID symptoms between male and female COVID-19 survivors. It found that post-COVID symptoms were present in up to 60% of hospitalized COVID-19 survivors eight months after the infection, with female survivors experiencing more symptoms than males. Female sex was also associated with a higher risk of developing mood disorders and other long-term post-COVID symptoms.

Considering sex and gender in Epidemiology: a challenge beyond terminology. From conceptual analysis to methodological strategies

Helene Colineaux et al.

Summary: This article aims to clarify concepts and measures related to gender in epidemiology, and proposes two analytical strategies. The first strategy involves defining and measuring an individual's gender to explore the mechanisms of health differences between men and women. The second strategy is to examine gender as an interaction between sex and social environment, and study its effects as a mechanism directly. Both strategies have limitations, but can contribute to more accurate analysis of the mechanisms underlying health differences between men and women.

Gender-Diverse Inclusion in Immunological Research: Benefits to Science and Health

Hannah Peckham et al.

Summary: The differences between male and female immune systems are not fully understood, but research has shown that sex hormones and sex chromosomes can impact immune responses in various ways. Historical shortcomings in reporting scientific findings have limited discovery of disease causes and the effects of diseases or interventions on females and gender-diverse groups. It is proposed that research should include cis-gender men, cis-gender women, transgender individuals, and gender-diverse people to allow for a more comprehensive understanding. Inclusion of gender-diverse individuals can provide insights into the effects of hormones and chromosomes, leading to discoveries that are more relevant and applicable to a larger population.

However, there is a positive correlation between sex hormone-binding globulin and the expression of certain genes.
