Tribocorrosion behavior of ?-type Ti-Nb-Ga alloys in a physiological solution

Ludovico Andrea Alberta et al.

Summary: Tribo-electrochemical behavior of two beta-type (100-x)(Ti-45Nb)-xGa (x = 4, 8 wt%) alloys in physiological solution was investigated. Microstructure and mechanical behavior were evaluated by X-ray diffraction, microhardness and ultrasonic method. Tribocorrosion tests showed degradation mechanisms of plastic deformation, delamination, abrasive and adhesive wear. An improved wear resistance with lower damage was observed for beta-92(Ti-45Nb)-8Ga alloy due to increased microhardness. The addition of Ga to Ti-45Nb improved corrosion resistance under mechanical loading.

Assessment of b stabilizers additions on microstructure and properties of as-cast b Ti-Nb based alloys

Rafael Formenton dos Santos et al.

Summary: The novelty of this work lies in the correlation between Moeq and mechanical and surface parameters. Ti-15Nb (TN-15), Ti-40Nb (TN-40), Ti-33Nb-33Zr (TNZ-33), Ti-40Nb-40Zr (TNZ40), and Ti-35Nb-7Zr-5Ta (TNZT) alloys were obtained by casting. The addition of Nb and Zr influenced the lattice parameters and crystal structure of the alloys. Grain size decreased with the addition of Nb and Zr, and roughness decreased as well. The contact angle and free energy surface values were inversely proportional, and the mechanical properties showed a similar trend to the Moeq values and cell parameter of phase b.

Atomic-scale investigations of passive film formation on Ti-Nb alloys

Ihsan Caha et al.

Summary: This study extensively investigated the passive film formation mechanisms on Ti-xNb alloys using electrochemical techniques such as EIS and MS measurements, as well as XPS and TEM analysis. It was found that Ti40Nb had lower corrosion resistance due to a thinner passive film compared to commercial pure Ti and Ti12Nb. The passive film formed on Ti12Nb and Ti40Nb alloys under steady-state conditions consisted of amorphous phases of TiO, Ti2O3, TiO2, Nb2O5, and crystalline phases of TiO2 (anatase) and Nb2O5.

Effects of Ga on the structural, mechanical and electronic properties of ?-Ti-45Nb alloy by experiments and ab initio calculations

Ludovico Andrea Alberta et al.

Summary: This study explores the properties of four novel beta-type (100-x) (Ti-45Nb)-xGa alloys for implant applications. Experimental and theoretical methods were used to investigate the structural, mechanical, and electronic characteristics of the alloys. The results show that the addition of Ga leads to a decrease in lattice parameter, an increase in strength and ductility, and an unaffected bulk modulus. The introduction of Ga-Ti super sp-like bonding orbitals explains the increase in Young's modulus upon Ga addition.

Ti-Mo-Zr alloys for bone repair: mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, and biological performance

Zhijun Guo et al.

Summary: Titanium alloys are widely used as bone implants, but their long-term clinical success is compromised by challenges such as the stress shielding effect. In this study, non-toxic alloying elements zirconium (Zr) and molybdenum (Mo) were added to titanium to produce Ti-Mo-Zr alloys. The addition of Zr and Mo improved the mechanical properties of the alloys and showed higher microhardness and compressive yield strength. Ti-12Mo-10Zr exhibited the lowest Young's modulus and the alloys demonstrated good cytocompatibility and osteointegration, making Ti-12Mo-10Zr a promising material for bone repair.

Microstructure, corrosion and anti-bacterial investigation of novel Ti-xNb-yCu alloy for biomedical implant application

Zheng Zhao et al.

Summary: Novel Ti-xNb-yCu alloys with different Cu and Nb concentrations were developed and their microstructure, corrosion properties, and bacterial inhibitory ability were investigated. The results showed that increasing Nb content improved the corrosion resistance of the alloys, while the addition of Cu had the opposite effect. Cu-containing Ti alloys exhibited excellent bacterial inhibitory properties. Ti30Nb3Cu alloy with high corrosion resistance and excellent bacterial inhibitory property is promising for biomedical implant applications.
