Oxidation behaviour and related microstructural changes of two β0-phase containing TiAl alloys between 600 °C and 900 °C

L. Mengis et al.

Summary: A comparative study was conducted on the isothermal oxidation behavior of two beta(0)-containing titanium aluminide alloys, GE 4822 and TNM-B1, in the HIPed condition at temperatures ranging from 600 degrees C to 900 degrees C for up to 1000 h in air. The alloys exhibited clear differences in oxidation behavior, but both experienced embrittlement after 100 h of exposure even at 600 degrees C. Phase transformations in the subsurface zone were found to have a strong impact on mechanical properties at room temperature.

Small-polaron-induced infrared opacification in rutile TiO2

I. Gonzalez de Arrieta et al.

Summary: The infrared emittance of single-crystal rutile TiO2 has been measured up to 2000 K in dry air, revealing a strong thermally-induced opacification phenomenon. This can be explained by small-polaron hopping conduction and is much stronger compared to similar phenomena in other oxide materials. The high-temperature optical conductivity shows a thermally activated contribution, with characteristics of small-polarons reinforced by the observation of broad near-infrared bands.
