Summary: In this study, a promising entropy-stabilized (Y0.2Dy0.2Er0.2Tm0.2Yb0.2)4Hf3O12 (5YH) hafnate prepared by ultrafast high-temperature sin-tering was investigated for its corrosion and wetting behavior in molten CMAS environment. The results showed that the precipitation of high-entropy apatite phase promoted the formation of HfO2 phase, improving the density and stability of the reaction layer, thus hindering the penetration of molten CMAS.

Mechanical and tribological performance of (TiNbTaWMo)C high-entropy ceramics in a wide temperature range

Yuan Fang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the mechanical and tribological properties of (TiNbTaWMo)C high-entropy carbides over a wide temperature range, as well as their oxidation behavior. (TiNbTaWMo)C high-entropy carbides were successfully prepared from five kinds of carbide powders by spark plasma sintering at 2000°C. The results showed that the sintered (TiNbTaWMo)C high-entropy carbides had Vickers hardness of 21.31 GPa, bending strength of 477.15 MPa, and fracture toughness of 6.41 MPa m1/2. At room temperature, the friction coefficient was stable at 0.35, and the wear rate was as low as 3.39 x 10-7 mm3/Nm. The wear mechanisms at different temperatures and the oxidation behavior of (TiNbTaWMo)C at 600°C and 800°C were discussed based on microstructures and phase analysis of the worn surfaces.

A functionally graded coating from ZrN to Ti: Experimental characterization, erosion behavior and design concept

Jinwei Yi et al.

Summary: In functionally graded coatings (FGCs), the elemental composition or structure gradually changes as a function of depth, allowing for a gradual transition of properties. A sandwich-like ZrN/Ti FGC, fabricated using the double glow plasma alloying (DGPA) technique, demonstrated high adhesion and erosion resistance due to a transition layer derived from atom diffusion. The coexistence of metal and ceramic phases in the transition layer deflected radial crack propagation and increased plastic work consumption. Thermodynamic calculations showed that controlling the diffusion thickness of Zr over N can improve the phase content of ZrN and reduce the prevalence of unfavorable TiN and Ti2N phases.
