Tailoring microstructural evolution and fracture damage behavior of a Mg-Y-Zn alloy during hot tensile deformation

Xiaomin Chen et al.

Summary: Hot tensile tests were conducted on a Mg-9.1Y-1.8Zn alloy to study its microstructural evolution and fracture damage. The results showed that the flow stress decreased with increasing temperature and decreasing strain rate. The formation of discontinuous dynamic recrystallization (DDRX) and particle-stimulated nucleation (PSN) induced by LPSO were crucial mechanisms for deformation and fracture. The fracture mechanism changed from intergranular to transcrystalline at temperatures above 250 degrees C, while the effects of strain rate were less significant.

Dynamic precipitation, dynamic recrystallization behavior, and microstructure evolution of the Mg-8.7Gd-4.18Y-0.42Zr alloy during hot deformation

Ling Zhang et al.

Summary: The hot compressive tests were conducted on Mg-8.7Gd-4.18Y-0.42Zr magnesium alloys at different strain rates and compression temperatures. Compression temperature was found to have a greater impact on dynamic precipitation compared to strain rate. The number of dynamic recrystallized (DRX) grains increased rapidly with higher compression temperature, while it decreased with higher strain rate. However, increasing the strain rate to 2 s(-1) resulted in a considerable increase in the number of DRX grains. The substructure development process was described as high-density dislocation -> VLAGBs (sub-GBs) -> LAGBs -> HAGBs -> DRX grains with increasing compression temperature and decreasing strain rate. DRX was identified as the predominant softening mechanism in this alloy, accompanied by continuous dynamic recrystallization (CDRX) process and discontinuous dynamic recrystallization (DDRX) process.

Modeling of temperature- and stress state-dependent yield and fracture behaviors for Mg-Gd-Y alloy

Pengfei Wu et al.

Summary: This research focuses on characterizing and modeling the effects of temperature and stress state on the yield and fracture behaviors of an Mg-Gd-Y alloy. Experimental results show that the strength of the alloy decreases non-uniformly with increasing temperature. The tension-compression asymmetry varies nonlinearly with temperature and strain, and the fracture behavior is influenced by both temperature and stress state. A modified Zerilli-Armstrong model is proposed to describe the plastic flow behavior, while the Cazacu-Barlat2004 yield function captures the non-uniform evolution characteristic. The established models are validated through numerical simulations.

Study on microstructure evolution and deformation mechanism of Ti-6554 based on power dissipation efficiency at supertransus temperatures

Summary: This study investigates the microstructure evolution and deformation mechanism of a Ti-6Cr-5Mo-5 V-4Al (Ti-6554) alloy during high temperature compression based on the power dissipation efficiency (eta). The results show that increasing the temperature and decreasing the strain rate can promote the dynamic recrystallization (DRX) process. Two types of DRX, namely, discontinuous dynamic recrystallization (DDRX) and continuous dynamic recrystallization (CDRX), are found. Moreover, by analyzing the change of eta throughout the strain range, as well as the peak eta under different conditions, this study establishes a link between eta and the corresponding deformation mechanism of the Ti-6554 alloy.
