A nanostructured Ag/Cu multilayered composite exhibiting high hardness and high electrical conductivity prepared by a novel multicomponent accumulative roll bonding

Hao Dong et al.

Summary: A novel multicomponent accumulative roll bonding (MARB) approach was proposed and successfully applied to prepare a nanostructured Ag/Cu multilayered composite. The MARB approach effectively suppresses shear band formation and reduces the thickness of the composite to 40 nm in only 6 cycles. The as-prepared nanostructured Ag/Cu multilayered composite exhibits high hardness (2.24 GPa) and high electrical conductivity (84% of international annealed copper standard; IACS), attributed to atomically ordered and chemically sharp hetero-phase interfaces and low density of grain boundaries resulting from the MARB process.

On the understanding and prediction of tribological properties of Al-TiO2 nanocomposites using artificial neural network

Ismail Najjar et al.

Summary: The manufacturing process greatly affects the wear properties of composite materials, making it difficult for mathematical models to accurately predict wear rates and coefficients of friction. This study investigates Al-TiO2 nanocomposites with varying TiO2 content and sliding loads, providing a better understanding of their tribological properties and improved predictability. Accumulative roll bonding (ARB) is used to create well-dispersed TiO2 nanoparticles in the Al matrix. Pin-on-disc tests are conducted to measure wear rates and coefficient of friction. A neural network model is employed to predict these properties based on the composite morphology, hardness, microstructure, and their evolution. The experimental results show that wear rates decrease as the number of ARB passes increases until reaching a plateau, with a maximum hardness improvement of 153.7% achieved after five ARB passes for the composite with 3% TiO2 nanoparticles. The neural network model accurately predicts wear rates and coefficients of friction for different wear loads, achieving determination coefficient R2 values of 0.9766 and 0.9866, respectively.

Microstructure and mechanical properties of AA1050/AA6061 multilayer composites via accumulative roll bonding and cryorolling and subsequent aging

Lingling Song et al.

Summary: AA1050/AA6061 multilayer composites were processed using a combination of accumulative roll bonding (ARB) and cryorolling, followed by aging treatment. The study analyzed the evolution of microstructure and mechanical properties of the composites. The results revealed that cryorolling improves the mechanical properties by enhancing interfacial flatness, delaying plastic instability, accumulating higher dislocation density, achieving grain refinement, reducing delamination, and promoting bonding interface quality. Cryorolled samples exhibited significantly higher ultimate tensile strength compared to ARBed samples after peak aging. Both ARBed and ARB + cryorolled samples showed optimal performance after aging at 100 degrees C. The increase in ultimate tensile strength in AA1050/AA6061 multilayer composites at peak aging is mainly due to the presence of ultrafine grains and fine precipitates in the AA6061 layer.

Prediction of the tensile properties of ultrafine grained Al-SiC nanocomposites using machine learning

I. M. R. Najjar et al.

Summary: We used machine learning (ML) to analyze the tensile strength of aluminum nanocomposites reinforced with m-SiC particles fabricated by ARB. The effect of ARB passes on the microstructure, phase analysis, tensile, and hardness properties was investigated. The experimental results showed the improved distribution of SiC particles with increasing ARB passes. The developed ML model, based on the Growth Optimizer Algorithm, accurately predicts the tensile properties of the composites.

Effect of unidirectional rolling and cross-rolling on microstructure and mechanical anisotropy of Mg-Gd-Y-Ag-Zr plates

Han Chen et al.

Summary: The effects of unidirectional rolling and cross-rolling on the microstructure and mechanical anisotropy of Mg-10Gd-2Y-0.4Ag-0.4Zr alloy plates were investigated. It was found that the unidirectional rolling plate had a finer grain size and obvious dynamic precipitation response, while the cross-rolling plate had a more uniform microstructure with larger grain size. The unidirectional rolling plate exhibited a strong mechanical anisotropy due to the presence of TD-split texture and anisotropic distributed particle strips, whereas the cross-rolling plate showed reduced yield anisotropy and elongation anisotropy due to the more uniform microstructure and rare RT-split texture.

A modified artificial neural network to predict the tribological properties of Al-SiC nanocomposites fabricated by accumulative roll bonding process

I. M. R. Najjar et al.

Summary: This study emphasizes the significant impact of SiC concentration and plastic deformation on the wear rates of aluminum composites containing varying volume fractions of SiC particles. It also demonstrates the effectiveness of a neural network model augmented with a particle swarm optimizer in predicting wear rates and coefficients of friction for complex composites. Experimental results show that increasing the number of accumulative roll bonding (ARB) cycles improves the homogeneity of SiC particle dispersion. Increasing the number of cycles and introducing additional SiC particles help to decrease wear rates and increase the friction coefficient. After nine ARB cycles, the Al-4 wt.% SiC nanocomposite exhibits the greatest improvement in both wear rate and friction coefficient. This sample also shows the highest level of hardness, which has increased by 139%. The proposed model accurately predicts the performance of all tested composites under four different wear loads, with determination coefficient R-2 values of 0.9768 and 0.9869 for the frictional coefficient and wear rates, respectively.

Optimization of the accumulative roll bonding process parameters and SiC content for optimum enhancement in mechanical properties of Al-Ni-SiC composites

Waheed S. Barakat et al.

Summary: Accumulative Roll Bonding (ARB) is an expensive technique due to the large number of controlling parameters, but a response surface methodology is used in this study to analyze the interaction effect between ARB parameters on the tensile strength and hardness of composite sheets. By investigating the microstructure, phase analysis, and mechanical properties of ARBed AA1050 composite sheets produced with different passes and SiC content, the significance of ARB parameters on the properties of the composites is confirmed. Numerical optimization reveals that the optimum ARB factors are 7.

On the microstructural and mechanical responses of dual-matrix Al-Ni/SiC composites manufactured using accumulative roll bonding

Mohamed I. A. Habba et al.

Summary: This article investigates the relationship between microstructural and mechanical changes in AlNi/SiC composites processed by Accumulative Roll Bonding (ARB) technique. Different SiC concentrations were used to reinforce Al and Al-Ni composites, and ARB was applied to achieve a homogenous dispersion of the three phases. Results show that the presence of a Ni layer enhances the dispersion of SiC in the matrix, positively impacting mechanical strength. However, increasing SiC content reduces adhesion between Al and Ni layers, decreasing the elasticity of the composites. The optimal stress enhancement with minimal reduction in elongation was achieved with 3% SiC content.

Summary: Nano/ultrafine-grained structures were produced in AA2024 alloy sheets using accumulative roll bonding (ARB) followed by friction stir welding (FSW). The FSW process caused localized heat generation and resulted in divergent grain structures in different regions of the weld nugget. The texture components in the stir zone were Cube {001}<100>, S {123}<634>, B {112}<110>, C {001}<110>, and copper {112}<111>. Grain growth phenomena, softening, and microhardness reduction were also observed.
