Yangli Ke et al.

Summary: In this study, waste pigeon guano (PG) was used as a biomass adulterant to enhance the photocatalytic activity of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4). A novel porous multielement-doped g-C3N4 photocatalyst (CN-PG-S) was fabricated using waste PG and melamine as precursors. The CN-PG-S exhibited abundant porous structures, high conductivity, and excellent photocatalytic abilities, leading to significantly improved H2-production and Cr(VI) reduction compared to pristine g-C3N4. The study highlighted the role of non-metallic and metallic elements in expanding visible-light absorption and facilitating charge separation, and the importance of the porous nanosheet structure in enhancing photocatalytic efficiency.

Unravelling the benefits of transition-metal-co-doping in lanthanide upconversion nanoparticles

Sonali Mohanty et al.

Summary: Recent advances in upconversion luminescent materials have highlighted their importance in both scientific research and future applications. However, the low upconversion luminescence intensity and limited tuneability hinder their versatile applications. This tutorial review focuses on the implementation of transition metal ion co-dopants to enhance upconversion efficiency in lanthanide nanomaterials. The review summarizes recent studies on the tailored design of UC materials with transition metal ion co-dopants and discusses the desirable functionality of transition metal ions in the host matrixes. In addition to improving upconversion efficiency, the incorporation of transition metal co-dopants has sparked interest in applications such as in vivo imaging, drug delivery, and nanothermometers.

Complexity of a Co3O4 System under Ambient-Pressure CO2 Methanation: Influence of Bulk and Surface Properties on the Catalytic Performance

Anastasiia Efremova et al.

Summary: This study focuses on exploring the complexity of the Co3O4 system during the CO2 methanation reaction, revealing that m-Co3O4 exhibits higher activity and stability compared to c-Co3O4 due to its morphology-induced heightened surface basicity. The experiment demonstrates that both bulk and surface properties such as morphology, cobalt oxidation states, acid-base properties, and presence of defect sites directly impact the catalytic performance and reaction mechanism. Additionally, loading 1% 5 nm Pt nanoparticles onto Co(3)O(4)s shows potential for a competitive noble-metal-free catalyst for CO2 methanation with close to 100% CH4 selectivity.
