Aging Hardening and Precipitation Characteristics of Extruded Mg-9Al-0.8Zn-0.2Mn-0.3Ca-0.2Y Alloy

Hyun Ji Kim et al.

Summary: In this study, a new alloy, AZXW9100, with high corrosion and ignition resistance characteristics is developed. The aging hardening and Mg17Al12 precipitation behavior of this alloy are investigated and compared with a commercial AZ91 counterpart. The results show that adding small amounts of Ca and Y to AZ91 alloy significantly alters the precipitation behavior during aging.

Athermally enhanced recrystallization kinetics of ultra-low carbon steel via electric current treatment

Kyeongjae Jeong et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigates the athermal effect of electric current on the recrystallization kinetics of ultra-low carbon steel. The results show that electric current treatment enhances the degree of recrystallization, and the recrystallization kinetics exhibit a unique tendency to decrease and then increase with increasing electric current density. The athermal effect of the electric current on recrystallization can be evaluated and predicted.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of heat-treatment and anodizing procedures on microstructure evolution and corrosion performance of two magnesium alloys with different Ca and rare earth element contents but the same Zn content. Results showed that corrosion performance is affected by both chemical composition and heat-treatment procedures. Anodizing process on the solution heat-treated F1 alloy led to a significant reduction in corrosion rate.

Effect on Zn on Microstructures and Mechanical Properties of Mg-Gd-Y-Zn LPSO Alloys

Jonghyun Kim et al.

Summary: This study investigates the microstructures and mechanical properties of Mg-1Gd-1Y-xZn alloys (x = 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, and 0.8). The formation of long-period stacking-ordered (LPSO) and beta phases in the as-cast alloys is observed. The volume fraction of LPSO phase increases with higher Zn content, while that of beta phase decreases. Homogenization dissolves the beta phase into the Mg matrix but has no significant effect on the volume fraction of LPSO phases. Increasing Zn content slightly reduces grain size and enhances texture. The Mg-1Gd-1Y-0.2Zn alloy shows excellent mechanical properties at room temperature due to its high density of fine LPSO phases and reinforcement capacity. Additionally, the low volume fraction of LPSO phases in this alloy suppresses yield asymmetry.
