Micro-/nano-scale interface structure and mechanical characteristics of the Al/Ti composite bar produced by a novel continuously-extruded technique

Mingfu Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel extrusion die is developed to embed continuous Ti wire into aluminum alloy, resulting in an extruded composite bar. The interface structure, elemental diffusion, and mechanical characteristics are investigated using various material characterization methods. The presence of three-dimensional amorphous regions and nanocrystalline Al layers, as well as the precipitation of Mg-/Si-enriched clusters, are observed. The annealing time influences the grain size and dislocation density of TiAl3. Additionally, different nanoscale TiAl3 grains and a nanoscale layer are detected at different interfaces. The extruded composite bar exhibits a remarkable strength-ductility balance, providing a new approach for aluminum profile development.

Microstructure evolution and constitutive modeling of as-cast A356 aluminum alloy in semi-solid deformation regime

A. H. Boluri Gashti et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the semi-solid deformation behavior of A356 aluminum alloys, including microstructure evolution and constitutive modeling. The research starts with investigating the semi-solid deformation behavior of primary dendritic cast structure, instead of using a feedstock prepared through spheroidization process. The findings show that deformation of solid grains in high strain conditions promotes substructure development and dynamic recrystallization in the semisolid temperature range. The penetration of liquid phase along newly developed boundaries also affects the softening behavior of the material. A phenomenological-physical constitutive equation is developed to predict the semisolid flow stress behavior of the material.

Effect of extrusion temperatures on the microstructures, mechanical properties and thermal properties of PM Al-20Si alloy

Chao Ding et al.

Summary: The morphology, mechanical properties, and thermal properties of Al-20Si alloy are influenced by the extruding temperature. The alloy extruded at 350 degrees has fine eutectic Si, which provides high strength but is not stable at high temperatures. In contrast, the alloy extruded at 550 degrees exhibits primary Si phase, which is large in size and more stable. Moreover, it also has in situ formed amorphous/delta* Al2O3, further reducing the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE).

Effect of Ce content on the microstructure and mechanical properties of squeeze-cast Al-5Mg-2.2Si-0.6Mn alloys

Haini Jin et al.

Summary: The effect of Ce content in the range of 0-0.5 wt.% on the microstructure and mechanical properties of squeeze-cast Al-5Mg-2.2Si-0.6Mn alloys was investigated. The addition of Ce resulted in grain refinement and improved mechanical properties. However, excessive Ce led to the formation of coarse and brittle phases, causing a decrease in mechanical properties.

Rapid solidification of hypoeutectic aluminum copper alloys using fast- scanning calorimetry

Lakshmi Ravi Narayan et al.

Summary: The rapid solidification behavior of binary aluminum copper alloys in the hypoeutectic range has been studied in this work. A chip-based calorimeter was used to achieve cooling rates up to 40,000°C/s. The data from calorimetry was utilized to produce fraction of solid curves, which are important for metal manufacturing processing models. The results showed higher undercoolings than predicted for growth-based rapid solidification, but not as high as those predicted for homogeneous nucleation.

Modification and refinement of Fe-containing phases, mechanical properties and strengthening mechanisms in Al-Fe alloys via Cr alloying and continuous rheo-extrusion

Xinyue Song et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of Cr addition on the microstructural evolution and mechanical properties of Al-1.5Fe (wt%) alloys in both as-cast and rheo-extruded states. The results demonstrate that moderate Cr addition can refine the microstructure and improve the mechanical properties of the alloy. However, excessive Cr addition leads to the formation of coarse ternary phases, resulting in deterioration of the mechanical properties. Rheo-extrusion further enhances the strength and ductility of the alloy.

Enhancing strength and ductility of low-cost rare earth Mg-5Y-Ni alloy containing LPSO phase fabricated via multi-pass rolling based on dislocation regulation and grain refinement

Yucheng Zhou et al.

Summary: A low-cost rare earth Mg-5Y-Ni alloy with enhanced strength and ductility was fabricated via multi-pass rolling, utilizing dislocation regulation and grain refinement. The alloy exhibited a fine recrystallized microstructure, with the finest grains obtained at a rolling temperature of 450 ?. The alloy rolled at 450 ? showed the highest strength, while the one rolled at 500 ? exhibited the best strength-ductility synergy and work hardening capability. The results demonstrate the feasibility of dislocation regulation in enhancing the strength and ductility of Mg alloys.

Prominent role of multi-scale microstructural heterogeneities on superplastic deformation of a high solid solution Al-7Mg alloy

Min Zha et al.

Summary: This paper focuses on the superplastic response of a high solid solution Al-7Mg alloy processed by equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) under uniaxial tension. The study reveals that the evolution of microstructural heterogeneities can be regulated to favor superplastic deformation, achieving impressive elongation of approximately 523%. The high superplasticity is attributed to the cooperated mechanism of dislocation slip accommodated by continuous dynamic recrystallization (CDRX) and grain boundary sliding (GBS) during deformation.
