Role of microstructural phases in enhanced mechanical properties of additively manufactured IN718 alloy

Sumit Choudhary et al.

Summary: The effect of different microstructural phases on mechanical and fatigue properties of additively manufactured Inconel 718 alloy was investigated in three different material conditions: as-built, as-built-machined, and as-built-heat-treated. The as-built samples showed a continuous structure of columnar and cellular dendrites of laves phases due to microsegregation. Machining reduced surface roughness and improved tensile and fatigue strength. Heat treatment resulted in dissolution of melt pool boundaries, breakdown of dendritic structure, and improved mechanical and fatigue properties. Four types of fatigue damage mechanisms were observed. The changes in properties were correlated with microstructural changes.

Mechanical Characterization of Near-Isotropic Inconel 718 Fabricated by Laser Powder-Bed Fusion

Sunny Sharma et al.

Summary: This study investigated the microstructural evolution and mechanical properties of the Ni-based superalloy Inconel (R) 718 fabricated by powder-based laser fusion process. The characterization involved X-ray diffraction, optical, and scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that solution heat treatment effectively reduced detrimental Laves phases and relieved thermal residual stresses caused by non-homogeneous recrystallization. This research is significant for understanding the improvement of structural properties in Ni-based superalloys.

Effect of NbC inoculants on the elastic properties and microstructure of additively manufactured IN718

J. F. S. Markanday et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of NbC inoculants on the elastic properties and microstructure of LBP-DED IN718. The addition of NbC particles increased the volume fraction of MC-type carbides and decreased that of the Laves phase. It was found that samples containing the inoculant exhibited marginally increased hardness and an enhanced {110} 211 Brass texture component. This textural enhancement is theorized to be a result of NbC restricting dendritic growth along specific directions during build, offering a method of achieving microstructural and textural control during additive manufacturing.

Merve Nur Dogu et al.

Summary: The recrystallization and grain growth behavior of IN718 alloy manufactured by laser powder bed fusion were studied. The texture evolution of the samples under different temperatures and holding times was investigated, and it was found that the formation of recrystallization nuclei was related to high defect density regions, while the presence of non-coherent precipitates limited the growth of recrystallized grains.
