A Review on the Application-Focused Assessment of Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation (PEO) Coatings Using Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy

Vijayan Sobhana Dilimon et al.

Summary: Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) coatings are widely used and their modifications are usually targeted towards specific applications. However, the evaluation of PEO coatings often focuses solely on the intended application without considering other potential uses. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) is a powerful technique for assessing PEO coatings, as it can analyze their structural, morphological, chemical, and electrochemical properties. Therefore, a comprehensive review describing the versatile behavior of PEO coatings using EIS is essential for researchers and engineers to evaluate PEO coatings beyond their intended applications.

A Superior Corrosion Protection of Mg Alloy via Smart Nontoxic Hybrid Inhibitor-Containing Coatings

Andrey S. Gnedenkov et al.

Summary: The study achieved an increase in the corrosion resistance of magnesium and its alloys by forming smart self-healing hybrid coatings in two steps. Firstly, a ceramic-like bioactive coating was synthesized on the surface of biodegradable MA8 magnesium alloy using plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) treatment. Then, the porous PEO layer was impregnated with a corrosion inhibitor 8-hydroxyquinoline (8-HQ) and a bioresorbable polymer polycaprolactone (PCL) to enhance the protective properties of the coating.

The Effect of Smart PEO-Coatings Impregnated with Corrosion Inhibitors on the Protective Properties of AlMg3 Aluminum Alloy

Andrey S. Gnedenkov et al.

Summary: Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) was used to form a self-organized microtubular structure protective coating on AlMg3 aluminum alloy in tartrate-fluoride electrolyte. The coating was further modified using corrosion inhibitors and polymer material. The morphology and composition of the obtained oxide coatings were analyzed using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The presence of inhibitors in the PEO-layer was confirmed using micro-Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The corrosion protection and efficiency of the coatings were evaluated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and localized scanning techniques. The impregnation of the coating with azole group inhibitors significantly improved the corrosion characteristics of the material, and additional sealing with polymer further enhanced the corrosion stability.

Rouhollah Ghorbani et al.

Summary: In this research, plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) coatings were prepared on 7075 Al alloy with the addition of Na2MoO4. The coatings showed the presence of Al2O3, SiO2, and MoO3 compounds. Molybdenum species were able to enter the coating through cracks and channels, partially sealing the pores. The addition of Na2MoO4 significantly improved the barrier action and corrosion resistance of the coatings.

Effects of silica nanoparticles addition on formation of oxide layers on Al-Si alloy by plasma electrolytic oxidation: The origin of stishovite under ambient conditions

Mikhail M. Krishtal et al.

Summary: The effects of adding different sizes of amorphous silica nanoparticles to the electrolyte during plasma-electrolytic oxidation of Al-Si alloy 361.0 were studied. The presence of 48 nm nanoparticles led to the unexpected formation of high pressure SiO2-phase, increasing oxidizability and improving the properties of oxide layers. A quantitative model was introduced to explain the interaction between nanoparticles and oxide layers, predicting structural changes and improvements in protective and mechanical properties.

Smart composite antibacterial coatings with active corrosion protection of magnesium alloys

A. S. Gnedenkov et al.

Summary: A new method of forming composite coatings with active corrosion protection function for magnesium alloys was developed using plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) method. The study showed that the composite coatings exhibited good resistance to pitting corrosion, and their protective properties were further enhanced by impregnating the surface layers with corrosion inhibitors. Additionally, controllable polymer pore sealing was found to enhance the overall protective effect. This research is of significant importance in the development of smart coatings with active anti-corrosion functionality, expanding the applications of electrochemically active materials, and potentially reducing the incidence of implant-related infections.
