Carbon segregation and cementite precipitation at grain boundaries in quenched and tempered lath martensite

L. Morsdorf et al.

Summary: Tempering is commonly used in high strength steel microstructures to rearrange carbon atoms, but its nano-scale interaction with crystallographic defects is challenging to observe experimentally. In this study, we investigate the redistribution of carbon atoms along martensite grain boundaries in low carbon steel after quenching and tempering using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and atom probe tomography (APT). Our findings reveal that the amount of carbon segregation to martensite grain boundaries depends on the boundary type, and the growth behavior of cementite precipitates differs at low- and high-angle grain boundaries due to crystallographic constraints. We also demonstrate the impact of carbon redistribution on the mechanical properties by comparing hardness results from boundary-containing probe volumes to nanoindentation results from pure bulk martensite volumes.

Substructure and crystallography of lath martensite in as-quenched interstitial-free steel and low-carbon steel

Akinobu Shibata et al.

Summary: In this study, the substructures and crystallographic features of as-quenched lath martensite in interstitial-free (IF) steel and low-carbon steel (0.2C steel) were analyzed using advanced microscopy techniques. The study revealed differences in the morphology and habit plane orientation between the two types of steel. Dislocation structures, cementite formation, and carbon segregations were observed, indicating significant changes in the substructure during quenching. Based on the experimental results, the researchers discussed the origin of the substructures and crystallographic features of lath martensite.

An improved model for estimating the peak load of resistance spot welds in pull-out failure during cross-tension testing

Hui Wang et al.

Summary: The previously developed analytical models for estimating the peak load of resistance spot welds in pull-out failure were improved by assuming a more realistic distribution of loading/deformation based on finite element modeling. An introduced parameter in the improved model was fitted using reported experimental results, primarily influenced by the shear strength at the failure position. The performance, improvement, and applicability of this model were subsequently discussed.

Transition in Interfacial Failure Mechanism of Resistance Spot Welds during Tensile-Shear Loading: Role of Fusion Zone Hardness

Nima Nadimi et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the effect of fusion zone hardness on the interfacial failure behavior of resistance spot welds. It is found that there is a critical fusion zone hardness beyond which the interfacial failure mechanism transitions from ductile shear failure to rapid crack propagation. In welds with high fusion zone hardness, fusion zone fracture toughness is the governing factor for the interfacial failure load, while in welds with low fusion zone hardness, fusion zone hardness itself would be the governing factor.

Achieving superior low-temperature toughness in high-strength low-carbon steel via controlling lath boundary segregation

Xinghao Wei et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of aging treatments at 500 and 550 degrees C on the impact performance of a Cu precipitation-strengthened steel at a low temperature of -80 degrees C were investigated. The main factor controlling the low-temperature toughness was found to be solute segregation at lath boundaries. Excellent impact performance of -180 J at -80 degrees C, along with high yield strength of -1050 MPa and total elongation of 19%, can be achieved by controlling the segregation of solute elements, specifically Mo and Mn, at the lath boundaries. The evolution of matrix and precipitates during aging treatments and the strengthening and toughening mechanisms were also discussed.

Influence of expulsion and heat extraction resulting from changes to electrode force on liquid metal embrittlement during resistance spot welding

S. Song et al.

Summary: Zinc coatings are commonly used to manufacture corrosion-resistant advanced high-strength steels (AHSS). However, in new third generation AHSS (3G-AHSS), interaction between the zinc coating and the steel substrate during resistance spot welding (RSW) may lead to liquid metal embrittlement (LME) cracking. This study found that the electrode force has a significant impact on LME, with different effects depending on whether welds experience expulsion or not.

Microstructure engineering of fusion zone in resistance spot welding of martensitic stainless steels: The role of Ni interlayer thickness

Hamidreza Aghajani et al.

Summary: Martensitic stainless steel (MSS) spot welds show low fracture toughness due to the formation of a brittle microstructure at the joint area. To improve the mechanical properties, the microstructure of the weld nugget was altered through the introduction of a Ni interlayer. Different thicknesses of Ni interlayers were used and the resulting microstructural changes were analyzed. The best mechanical properties were achieved with a Ni interlayer thickness of 200 μm and above, which resulted in a fully austenitic microstructure in the weld nugget.

Effect of post-weld tempering pulse on microstructure and mechanical properties of resistance spot welding of Q&P1180 steel

Ting Chen et al.

Summary: By applying a suitable post-weld tempering pulse, the nugget microstructure of RSWs in Q&P1180 steel can be optimized, resulting in improved mechanical properties, especially in cross-tension and tensile-shear tests. The post-weld tempering treatment optimizes the microstructure of the nugget, reducing hardness and increasing toughness, thereby enhancing the weld's resistance to tension and shear.

An integrated approach for numerically predicting the failure of resistance spot welds

Hui Wang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a numerical approach that integrates theoretical and empirical models with finite element (FE) model to predict the failure of resistance spot welds. By evaluating the hardness of spot welds and using it to determine the local mechanical properties, this approach faithfully follows the weld geometry and boundary conditions when generating the FE model. It considers both a Gurson-type damage model and a cohesive zone model for pull-out failure and interface failure and validates the predictions with experimental observations. The successful estimation of critical nugget size demonstrates the utility and reliability of this approach.

Improvement of strength-ductility combination in ultra-high-strength medium-Mn Q&P steel by tailoring the characteristics of martensite/retained austenite constituents

Jiayu Li et al.

Summary: In this study, a low carbon medium-Mn steel was subjected to different quenching and partitioning (Q&P) processes to investigate the influence of fresh martensite and retained austenite constituents (M/RA) on microstructure characteristics and mechanical properties. The study found that the fraction of M/RA decreases with increasing annealing time, and the morphology changes from large-sized blocky islands to fine granular or lath-like shape. A new model, the CCE-PAG model, was proposed to predict the fraction changes and showed better agreement with experimental results compared to the traditional CCE model. The long-time annealed samples exhibited a better combination of strength and ductility, while the short-time annealed samples tended to exhibit brittle fracture.

Correlation between strength and hardness for substructures of lath martensite in low- and medium-carbon steels

Kwangsik Kwak et al.

Summary: Microtensile and nanoindentation tests were conducted to evaluate the contribution of block boundary to yield strength and to correlate the strength and hardness of lath martensite steels. A habit-plane-dependent yielding behavior was observed and it was found that the anisotropic yielding behavior was attributed to the formation of dislocation wall structures. The contribution of single-block boundary to resolved shear stress at the onset of yielding was constant with increasing carbon content.

Impact of liquid metal embrittlement inner cracks on the mechanical behavior of 3rd generation advanced high strength steel spot welds

Summary: Controlled degradation of welding parameters is used to produce homogeneous AHSS resistance spot welds with significant LME inner cracks. Impact of LME inner cracks on mechanical behavior is studied by interrupted cross tension and tensile shear test. LME inner cracks seldom affect the final fracture path of the welds, leaving the load bearing capacity and failure type mostly unaffected in tensile shear or even increased in cross tension.
