Modelling and analysis of the specific cutting energy for ultra-precision diamond cutting of Ti6Al4V alloy

Zhanwen Sun et al.

Summary: Ultra-precision diamond cutting is a promising method for fabricating precision parts of titanium alloys. This study proposes an analytical specific cutting energy (SCE) model that takes into account various factors such as material microstructures, spring back, size effect, cutting edge effect, temperature evolution, and tool-chip frictional states. The results show that the cutting edge effect and spring back contribute to a high SCE at small undeformed chip thickness. The study also suggests an energy-oriented machining parameters optimization method to minimize the SCE in UPDC of titanium alloys.

Molecular dynamics simulation on crystal defects of single-crystal silicon during elliptical vibration cutting

Changlin Liu et al.

Summary: This paper explores the formation mechanism of crystal defects in single-crystal silicon during elliptical vibration cutting (EVC) using molecular dynamics simulation. The study finds that the cutting stage in EVC greatly influences the surface morphology, including elastic recovery and side flow. The preferred slip motion during subsurface damage formation is distinct in the extrusion and shear stage. The influence of cutting temperature and speed on crystal defects formation is also investigated, revealing the increase in proportion of Shockley partial dislocations at elevated temperature and the suppression of crystal defects generation with higher speed ratio.

Gas refractive index sensor with an integrated prism and a microlens array

An-Chi Wei et al.

Summary: A novel sensor integrating a prism and a micro-lens array is developed for measuring the refractive index of gas. This sensor is constructed in a single optical path setup and does not require a spectrometer or other spectrum-sensing devices. The gas is injected into a chamber equipped with a prism, and the exit probe beam is decomposed by a micro-lens array to achieve multi-focalization. The sensor is used to measure the refractive indexes of air and nitrogen, with the measured refractive index of nitrogen agreeing with previous data. Considering twice the standard deviation, a measurement precision of 4.70 x 10-6 RIU is achieved for nitrogen refractive index measurement.

Conversion of a Gaussian-distributed circular beam to a flat-top-distributed square beam in laser shock processing based on a micro-lens array structure

Jinliang Han et al.

Summary: A novel beam homogenisation system based on a micro-lens array and beam expansion structure is proposed in this study. It can convert a Gaussian-distributed circular beam to a flat-top-distributed square beam with a size of 2-5 mm and a homogeneity degree exceeding 95%. The experimental results demonstrate the ability of this beam-homogenisation system to perform laser shock processing.

Subsurface damage model in single and double scratching of fused silica with a blunt indenter

Huapan Xiao et al.

Summary: Subsurface damages (SSDs) generated during abrasive processes have a significant impact on the performance and life of devices made from brittle materials. In this paper, a theoretical model for SSD depth in single and double scratching of brittle materials is developed by extending indentation fracture mechanics and deriving analytic equations for contact areas between the indenter and the workpiece. Experiments on polished fused silica validate the model and investigate the effects of scratch spacing on surface/subsurface morphologies, scratching load, and friction coefficient.

Milan Trifunovic et al.

Summary: This study focused on investigating the influence of cutting parameters on cutting energy and machinability when using a cutting tool made of polycrystalline diamond to turn unreinforced polyoxymethylene copolymer. The research identified the depth of cut as a key parameter for balancing cutting energy and material removal rate, observed variable effects of feed rate and cutting speed on cutting energy, and highlighted chip form as a crucial criteria for evaluating machinability of POM-C.
