An investigation on the hot workability and microstructural evolution of a novel dual-phase Mg-Li alloy by using 3D processing maps

Shengli Guo et al.

Summary: 2D and 3D processing maps were established using Prasad's and Murty's instability criteria, and the accuracy of the maps was verified through microstructural analysis and hot rolling test. The optimum hot working parameters of the novel dual-phase Mg-Li alloy were obtained based on the rectified processing map.

Strengthening-toughening methods and mechanisms of Mg-Li alloy: a review

Xiang Peng et al.

Summary: Magnesium-lithium (Mg-Li) alloy, as the lightest metal structure material, has great market prospects. However, achieving a balance between superlightness and high strength, as well as improving high-temperature strength and stability remains challenging. Alloying, grain refinement, and compound strengthening are effective methods to enhance the mechanical properties of Mg-Li alloy.

Tailoring the microstructure and texture of a dual-phase Mg-8Li alloy by varying the rolling path

Jing Xu et al.

Summary: Dual-phase Mg-Li alloys with different rolling paths were studied to investigate the effect of rolling path on microstructure, texture and mechanical anisotropy. The lamellar alpha+beta structures remained after ED-rolling and subsequent annealing, while disappeared after TD-rolling. The texture of beta phase was hardly affected by the rolling path. Annealing only reduced the maximum intensity of texture without changing the type of texture. VPSC simulations revealed that the activated deformation modes and alpha/beta phase boundaries played important roles in texture evolution. There was an obvious mechanical anisotropy after ED-rolling, which disappeared after TD-rolling.

Achieving high strength in a Mg-Li-Zn-Y alloy by α-Mg precipitation

Zhen Wei et al.

Summary: The strength of Mg-8.5Li-7.5Zn-1.5Y alloy is significantly enhanced through simple heat treatment. The yield strength increment of 173 MPa is rarely reported in Mg alloys. The formation of abundant needle-shaped α-Mg precipitates uniformly distributed in the β-Li matrix is mainly responsible for the remarkable improvement in yield strength. This new finding is expected to contribute to the design of high-performance Mg-Li alloys.

Microstructure and mechanical properties of heat-treated Mg-6.2Li-3.5Al-3Y alloy

Peng Peng et al.

Summary: This study investigates the microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of Mg-6.2Li-3.5Al-3Y alloy after different heat treatment processes. The results show that the tensile strength and ductility of the alloy increase first and then decrease with increasing heat treatment time. It is concluded that the improved mechanical properties are attributed to the combined effects of precipitation hardening and solid solution strengthening.
