First-principles analysis of the grain boundary segregation of transition metal alloying elements in γFe

Kazuma Ito et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigates the grain boundary segregation of transition metal alloying elements in paramagnetic gamma Fe and its dependence on the grain boundary character using first-principles calculations. The results show that the segregation behavior of these elements is influenced by the grain boundary character, and Ti, Cu, Nb, and Mo tend to segregate at all investigated grain boundaries. On the other hand, V, Ni, Co, Cr, and Mn show different segregation behaviors depending on the grain boundary. These findings provide important basic data for material design and understanding the effects of alloying elements in gamma Fe.

Breaking the purity-stability dilemma in pure Cu with grain boundary relaxation

Huangliu Fu et al.

Summary: The processing and applications of pure metals are limited by a purity-stability dilemma. However, recent studies have found that by adjusting the structure of grain boundaries, this dilemma can be overcome. It has been discovered that thermal stability and hardness of nanograined copper samples increase with higher purities, contrary to the conventional impurity effect. This anomalous impurity effect provides an alternative direction for stabilizing purer metals.

Solving oxygen embrittlement of refractory high-entropy alloy via grain boundary engineering

Zhengqi Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, large plasticity and high strength were achieved in NbMoTaW RHEAs through grain boundary engineering and the addition of metalloid B or C. The room-temperature brittleness of as-cast NbMoTaW RHEA was found to be caused by grain boundary segregation of oxygen, which was alleviated by the added metalloids, leading to a change in fracture morphology.

First-principles study on the P-induced embrittlement and de-embrittling effect of B and C in ferritic steels

Jingliang Wang et al.

Summary: First-principles calculations were conducted to investigate the Sigma 5(310) grain boundary in Fe with B, C, and P, revealing the embrittlement caused by P and the de-embrittling effect of B and C. The energetic preference of interstitial B and C over interstitial P was found, with only substitutional P exacerbating grain boundary cohesion. The study demonstrated that the influence of these elements on the grain boundary cohesion is a complex interplay between mechanical and chemical contributions.

Strengthening Effect of Nb on Ferrite Grain Boundary in X70 Pipeline Steel

Zhongyi Li et al.

Summary: By studying the strengthening effect of niobium on ferrite grain boundaries through microstructure analysis and atomic probe testing, it is found that niobium alloying can stabilize ferrite grain boundaries, provide more electrons for grain boundary bonding, and ultimately enhance the strength and toughness of the material. This work provides a fundamental understanding for pipeline steel strengthening through element alloying.

Machine learning to predict aluminum segregation to magnesium grain boundaries

Joseph Messina et al.

Summary: Magnesium alloys have advantages in applications due to their high strength-to-weight ratio, but properties like corrosion resistance, formability, and creep are still concerns, especially in magnesium-aluminum alloys. This study quantifies aluminum segregation energetics at grain boundaries using atomistic simulations, showing that the segregation of aluminum is influenced by grain boundary structure and the local atomic environment, which has broad implications for grain boundary science and engineering.

Dynamic Precipitation of Laves Phase and Grain Boundary Features in Warm Deformed FeCrAl Alloy: Effect of Zr

Wenbo Liu et al.

Summary: Warm compression deformation of Fe-13.5%Cr-4.7%Al-2.0%Mo-0.70%Nb-0.40Ta (wt%) (FeCrAl) and Fe-13.5%Cr-4.7%Al-2.0%Mo-0.45%Nb-0.40Ta-0.11Zr (wt%) (FeCrAl-Zr) ferritic stainless steel was conducted, showing that strain rate had little effect on peak stress and the addition of Zr increased the proportion of low-angle grain boundaries. Additionally, in FeCrAl-Zr alloy, specific grain boundary precipitates were formed, contributing to high-temperature creep resistance.

Enhancing technological prospect of nanostructured bainitic steels by the control of thermal stability of austenite

Aleksandra Krolicka et al.

Summary: The excellent mechanical properties of nanostructured bainitic steels are primarily attributed to the ultra-fine scale of their structure constituents. However, limitations in common industrial applications include issues such as joining, long-term operation at elevated temperatures, and corrosion resistance. Enhancing the thermal stability of retained austenite is crucial for providing these properties, requiring a different approach in chemical composition design and heat treatment parameters.

Summary: The study found that in a model Mg-Nd-Mn alloy, nonsymmetrical segregation of solutes occurred in linear tilt grain boundaries to generate ordered interfacial superstructures. This phenomenon is totally different from the classical McLean-type segregation and refreshes our understanding on strain-driven interface segregation behaviors.

Effect of S on H-induced grain-boundary embrittlement in γ-Fe by first-principles calculations

Yang He et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the presence of H and S in the M5 grain boundary results in significant embrittlement effects, with a more pronounced effect when H and S coexist. S atoms can partially compensate for the embrittlement induced by H, which is crucial for designing steel alloys resistant to hydrogen embrittlement.
